clan_system.htm

After being requested to submit “dodem” information into Red Lake Nation Newsletter, consultation was arranged with an elder and this is what I was advised to submit.

Although there are more clans here in Red Lake Nation, below is a list of the most common clans of Red Lake Nation which are identified on the Red Lake Nation Flag. Listed along with each clan is the English language version and also each is identified in Ojibwemowin. As for the characteristics and duties of each clan, I will need to do more research and more time will be needed. For now, we will submit this and for one to say my clan, they will need to add nindodem. Example: Makwa nindodem which translates to bear is my clan.

Makwa-Bear

Miikinaak-Turtle

Owazisii-Bullhead

Nigig-Otter

Migizii-Eagle

Waabizheshi-Marten

Ogiishkimanisii-Kingfisher
