Wellstone House to be dedicated

On Tuesday, October 28, 2003, Equay Wiigamig will dedicate their newly constructed Wellstone House, which is a facility right next to the Women’s Shelter designed to serve several purposes and to serve as another resource.

It all begins about 10 am. with a traditional blessing, followed with a walk from the Equay Wiigamig facility to the Humanities Center in Red Lake.

At 12 noon a balloon release is planned, with a moment of silence to honor victims of domestic violence and also in memory of Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Shelia, who along with others died in a plane crash in October 2003.

Guest speakers are scheduled to speak shortly thereafter, with a 1 pm. Feast and Music session, featuring turkey and all the trimmings.

Editors Note: On October 25, 2003, thousands of people will mark the first anniversary of their tragic death with music and other events at various locations around the United States. One of those events is World Music Day on October 25th.

Also, on November 13, 2003, a conference will take place that will launch the Shela Wellstone Institute. Arizona Governor Janet Napolitana will keynote the inaugural conference of the Shela Wellstone Institute. The conference will examine the complex issues regarding custody isputes, visitation and involvement with the child welfare system facing victims of domestic violence as they seek safety for themselves and their children.
