Some of Red Lake's Royalty took part in Native American Heritage Night at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Thursday, September 18, 2003 prior to a Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox game. They were Red Lake Nation Jr. Princess Sunni Barron and Red Lake Nation Brave Negoni Benais Smith.
The night to honor Native Americans, presented in part by the American Indian Chamber of Commerce, begin with exhibition dancing performed by Pow Wow Royalty from ten of Minnesota's tribes and the spotlight feature of world-renowned hoop dancer Brendon Fairbanks. Also performing was award winning drum group Midnight Express.
The ceremonial first pitch was tossed by Henry Boucha, Ojibwa from Warroad. Boucha played on the 1972 Olympic hockey team and his professional hockey career was cut short when he suffered an eye injury in 1975 while playing for the North Stars. He also has been labeled as one of the most electrifying player in Minnesota hockey history.
Award-winning recording artist Jana performed the National Anthem, while the Sisseton-Wahpeton Vietnam Veterans Association "Kit Fox Society", a non-profit membership of Dakota veterans that was established in the early 1980's, presented the color guard. A Bald Eagle from the Raptor Center was positioned at home plate during the pregame show. |
