| I am happy to announce that the REDBY COMMUNITY PATROLS will begin patrolling throughout the entire district of Redby beginning the week of June 14, 2009. The patrols have police radios and will be in direct contact with Red Lake Law Enforcement. They will be reporting suspicious activity that they encounter including curfew violation, vandalism, tagging, event security, etc. Community patrols are not law enforcement officers and will not be enforcing laws or responding to calls that require trained police officers.
History: Concerned community members from the Redby District began meeting with Red Lake Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) in late 2006. In early 2007, the PSN team formed the Redby Community Board of Directors. Also in 2007 Red Lake Department of Public Safety began participating in community meetings and assisting with the formation of the Redby and O-Bah-Shing Community Patrol Projects. Meetings are being held at 5:30 p.m. on the 1st Monday of each month at the New Beginnings building. Events such as the PSN All-District Meeting, PSN All-District Block Party, and National Night Out were hosted by Redby Community Board of Directors. Throughout the past few years much time has been spent researching and organizing the Redby Community Patrol Project. Time was spent creating work plans, finding donations, looking for more volunteers, participating in classroom & ride-along trainings with Red Lake Law Enforcement Officers, etc. As with most major projects there have been stumbling blocks along the way and stretches of not being able to meet for a variety of reasons; through it all the Redby Community Patrols have shown great commitment and dedication to making their vision of a safer community become a reality. It is important that all community members know that although community patrols are NOT law enforcement officials, their safety is governed under Section 502.01, Subdivision 4 in the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians Tribal Code: a) any person who commits any assault against a Police Officer, Tribal Game Warden, Tribal Security or any other law enforcement or court personnel is guilty of a gross misdemeanor; b) A person convicted of this subdivision 4 shall be sentenced to one (1) year and a fine of $5,000… Chi Mii Gwetch to Red Lake Law Enforcement for providing patrol training and patrol car donations for the community patrol projects and assigning officers to both Redby and O-Bah-Shing Community Patrols. |
