| What is Project Safe Neighborhoods?
The Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative began for Red Lake Nation in 2002 when the US Attorney’s Office identified the Center for Reducing Rural Violence (CRRV) as the organization to work with Red Lake as part of their community outreach requirements. Minnesota went beyond what was required because most states only did public service announcements. For most of 2002 the majority of time was spent attempting to identify people within Red Lake who would want to work with CRRV and then a survey was conducted throughout Red Lake. In March 2006, the Red Lake Band of Chippewa and the Department of Justice felt direct funding to establish a full-time position here at Red Lake would better meet the needs of the Red Lake Nation. The Project Coordinator for Red Lake Project Safe Neighborhoods is responsible for providing assistance to each of the four community PSN Teams in revamping, implementing, and continuing additions to the community work plans. |
