| Overview of Balancing Our Lifestyles The Red Lake Comprehensive Health Services diabetes prevention program Balancing Our Lifestyles is one of 36 programs involved in the competitive grant Special Diabetes Program for Indians. The purpose of the grant is to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by developing healthier lifestyles through diet and exercise. We educate our participants about healthier eating habits, motivate them to increase their physical activity and assist them in reaching a 7% weight loss goal. It was proven in the original DPP study that by achieving healthier lifestyle choices and losing 7% of body weight, we can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is when blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to have diabetes. Each participant recruited to our program goes through a 16-week diabetes prevention curriculum course that is geared to educate and help them make healthier eating choices by watching portions, counting fat grams/calories, reading labels, etc. We also show participants how to find their target heart rates, tip the calorie balance with diet and exercise, and reduce stress levels. Our program continues to reach out to the community through various community-based activities, such as, community screenings, weekly walks, family fun fitness days, venison canning, diabetes bingo, and group exercises. These activities are generally open to everyone and they are geared to promote diabetes prevention awareness throughout the Red Lake Nation community. Questions: Call us today at 679-4144 |
