Rose Sargent

Rose Marie Sargent, 71, of Bemidji, died on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bemidji from pancreatic cancer.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji with the Rev. Patrick Sullivan officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Antipas Episcopal Cemetery in Redby.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rose was born on Dec. 2, 1032, in Red Lake, to George and Josephine (Laurence) Smith. She was educated in Redby and graduated from Red Lake High School. After graduation, she moved to Minneapolis where she was employed as a nanny. She married Earl “Buck” Sargent Sr. In Warroad on August 17, 1953. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 17, 2003. In 1965 they made their home in Bemidji, where they raised their two sons, Gary and Earl Jr. She was especially proud of her sons’ athletic accomplishments.

She was an Avon Representative for 15 years. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting for her family crafts, gardening and collecting angels. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. Family and friends brought her the greatest joy. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the “angels” in her life.

She is survived by her husband of Bemidji; sons, Gary (Jay) Sargent of Bemidji; Earl (fiancé Roma Ryan) Sargent Jr. of Red Lake; sister, Freida (Harold) Statner of Chicago, Ill.; one grandson; five granddaughters; two great-granddaughts and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Donald and Douglas Smith; sisters, Dorothy Puchinsky, Doris Bailey, Mildred Dudley and Ruth Beaulieu.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to North Country Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
