ISADORE “Chi Mookomaan ” PERKINS
Isadore William Perkins, (Indian Name, Chi MookomaaN meaning “Big Knife”) 71, of
Ponemah, Minnesota died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at the Jourdain-Perpich Extended
Care Center in Red Lake, Minnesota.
Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck is assisting the family with arrangements.
Traditional Indian services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 15, 2004 at the
Ponemah Community Center in Ponemah, Minnesota with Spiritual Leader Tom Stillday, Jr.
officiating. A wake will begin 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the Ponemah
Community Center and will continue until the services. Burial will be at the Perkins’ Family Burial
Grounds in Ponemah, Minnesota.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Goga, Robert Perkins, Melvin Bullhead, Harold Raincloud,
Marvin Hurd, Calvin Spears, and Rudy Kingbird.
Active pallbearers will be Darryl Beaulieu, Jr., Scott Perkins, Sheldon Perkins, Stephen
Stillday, Gary Charwood, Eddie D. Perkins, with alternates, Larry Dow, John Charwood, and
Don Charwood.
He was born on January 18, 1933 at Ponemah, Minnesota, the son of William and Margaret
(Stillday) Perkins. He attended school in Red Lake. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served
during the Korean War. He was honorable discharged receiving a purple heart and a Silver
Helmet. He married Margaret Dow on October 20, 1958 in Ponemah, Minnesota at the Wahbun
Chapel. He had worked for the Redby Sawmill. He worked for the Red Lake Health Services at
the IHS Hospital from 1993 to 2000. He spent the last few years in nursing homes in Blackduck,
Minneapolis and Red Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Perkins of Ponemah; five daughters, Debbie (George)
Beaulieu of Ponemah, Melinda (Calvin) Perkins of Ponemah, Charlotte (Rudy) Kingbird of
Ponemah, Patsy Whitefeather of Bemidji, and Melissa (Dave) Perkins of Ponemah; two sons,
Eddie (Annie) Perkins of Ponemah, Curtis Perkins of Ponemah; two sisters, Armella Charwood of
Grand Rapids, and Alberta (Melvin) Dow of Ponemah; two brothers, Robert Perkins of Ponemah,
and Edward (Virginia) Perkins, Sr. of Red Lake; 18 Grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and
several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debbie; one great grand daughter,
Breanna; two brothers, Tony Wells and William Perkins, Jr.; and three sisters, Darlene Johnson,
Evelyn Johns and Carolyn Perkins.
