Gertrude “Gertie” Gillespie
Gertrude
Barbara Gillespie, 91, Fergus Falls, died May 7, 2005,
at the Broen Memorial Home.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, May 11th at 10 am. In the Light and Life Auditorium at the
Broen Home with Rev. Robert Kieffer
officiating. Burial was in the
St. Otto’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was on
Tuesday from 4-7
p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the
service. Glende-Nilson
Funeral Home of Fergus Falls was in charge of arrangements.
Gertie was born February 5, 1914 in Red
Lake, MN
to Louis and Tamma (King) Smith. She grew up on the Red Lake Reservation,
moving to Minneapolis in her adult years.
As a young girl she attended the Wahpeton
Indian School. In 1977 she moved
to Fergus Falls along with her daughter and family. She was married to George Gillespie.
Gertie was a
devoted mother and grandmother. “Grams”
was loved by all who knew her. She loved
to laugh and enjoyed crocheting and doing puzzles in her later years.
She is
survived by her daughter; Margaret Gothier of Fergas Falls; 12 grandchildren, Alexander (Lynnell) Gillespie, Sharon (Arthur) Countryman, Gregory
(Irene) Gothier, Susan (Curt) Odden,
Lisa (Scott) Holen, David (Portia) Gothier, Patty (Troy) Veiterheimer,
Rick (Donna) Gothier, Mike Gothier,
Tom Gothier, Tim (Jennifer) Gothier
and Robert Gothier; 21 great-grandchildren and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband, George in 1978; two sons, Alexander
and Curtis Gillespie; grandson, Gary Gothier;
great-grandson Christopher Gothier;
great-granddaughter Dawn Gillespie; eight siblings, George Smith, Mary Barrett,
Joseph Smith, Mathilda Holthusen,
Tillie Smith, Jane Lussier, Rose Harrison and Charles
Smith.
