Duane L. Pemberton
Duane L. Pemberton, 76, of Bemidji, died on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the North Country
Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Philip’s Catholic Church
in Bemidji. A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral
Home of Bemidji with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Antipas Church Cemetery in
Redby.
Pallbearers will be Billy Pemberton, Scott Pemberton, Rob Pemberton, Arnold Pemberton Jr.,
Eric Nelson, Rusty Nelson, Donovan English, Craig Maxwell, Lee Pemberton, Ken Washington
and Jeffery Pemberton.
Honorary Bearers will be Dino Garrigan, Ken Anderson, Joe Holstein, Jerry Northbird, Jim
Eisenrich, Archie Barrett, Ron Beaulieu, Russell Nelson Sr. III, Herman Downwind, Donovan
Haaland, Ken Hausauer, Douglas White, Del Lindseth, Roger Pfannenstein, John Helsler, Skip
Longie and Gordy Northbird.
Duane L. Pemberton was born August 24, 1927 in Red Lake, MN to George and Eleanor
(Workman) Pemberton. He grew up in Redby and went to Redby Elementary and Red Lake High
School. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He was discharged in 1946. Following his
discharge he attended Hanson?s Mechanical School in Fargo, ND. He married Ethel Beaulieu on
October 29, 1947 in Redby, MN. He worked at Red Lake Fisheries in Redby and the Buick
dealership in Bemidji. He owned Pemberton Pure Oil Service Station in Red Lake. Duane worked
for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads Dept. in Red Lake, Cass Lake, MN, and Bemidji for 39
years. He also worked for Property Management of the Leech Lake Tribe in Cass Lake.
He and his wife raised two grandchildren, Karianne Washington and Kristy King and also
babysat 3 great grandchildren for 8 years. He enjoyed bowling, horses, fishing and hunting. He
was an avid gardener and liked woodworking and cooking; he was famous for his hominy. Duane
adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren and considered them the light of his life. He
served a Chairman of the Red Lake School Board for 12 years. He also belonged to the VFW and
the American Legion in Bemidji.
Duane is survived by his wife Ethel of Bemidji; daughter Georgia (Tutter) Downwind of
Redby; sons Allen Duane (Mavis) Pemberton and Dave Dudley, both of Redby; six grandchildren:
Kristy (Doug White) King, Karianne (Ken) Washington, Michelle Lyons and Willow Lyons; six
great grandchildren: Kendra Washington, Christopher Washington, Madison Washington,
Brennen Pemberton, Joeley Lyons and Jerald Downwind; sisters Joan (Russell) Nelson and Nancy
Beaulieu; brothers Donald "Red" Pemberton and Arnold Pemberton Sr.; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Louis and Leo Pemberton.
