Calvin Kingbird Sr.


Calvin "Bugoonce" Kingbird, Sr., 80, of the Eagle Clan, whose Indian name was ;Gabizidong' which means "the one that listens", of Ponemah, Minnesota died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at his residence in Ponemah.

Traditional funeral services in the Indian custom will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the Ponemah Community Center in
Ponemah with spiritual leader Thomas Stillday, Jr. officiating.  A wake will begin at 2 PM on Thursday, January 31 at the Ponemah Community Center and
will continue until the time of services on Saturday. Interment will be in the Kingbird family burial grounds in Ponemah.

Active Pallbearers will be Robert "Moe" Rushman, Roy White, Sr., Louie Clark, Jon Parker, Sr., Harlan Strong, David Cournoyer, Sr., with alternate
Harlan Kingbird. 

Honorary Pallbearers will be Russell Porter, Rusty Cloud, Mel Owens, Jr., Richard Kingbird, Dale Kingbird, and Lyman Kingbird.

He was born on November 10, 1927 in Red Lake, MN, the son of Allen Kingbird, Sr. and Mary Mosher.  He lived in Mizpah and Gemmell, MN for many years before moving back to Ponemah 25 years ago. He married Cecelia Rushman on September 16, 1948 in Red Lake.  He was a logger all of his life until he retired and moved back to Ponemah.  He liked doing puzzle books, going to the casino, and spending time with his family. 

He is survived by his 5 children, Oliver C. Kingbird of Hibbing, Iris Barrett of Red Lake, Rita (Louie Clark) Kingbird of Redby, Richard A. Kingbird of Hibbing, and Allen (Peggy) Kingbird of Redby; a special grandson Ron (Jami Cluff) Kingbird who he raised of Ponemah; a sister Margaret (Russell) Porter of Bemidji; 2 brothers Kenneth Kingbird of Ponemah and Allen Kingbird, Jr. of Red Lake; 11 grandchildren, Val, Rob, and Donna Parker, Ron and Angie Kingbird, Roy and Chris White, and Jonathan Kingbird, Rochelle Howard, Harlan and Crystal Kingbird; 26 great grandchildren, and 3
great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Rushman Kingbird; his parents; 2 sons, Harland J. Kingbird and Delbert W. Kingbird; a daughter, Mary H. Kingbird; 5 brothers, Eddie, Dan, Jim, Delbert, and Bruce Kingbird; 3 sisters, Lorraine Beaulieu, Lucille Owens, and Florence Deshamp; 2
grandchildren, Laurie Parker and Blaine White; and 2 great grandchildren.
