Bernadine was born on April 18, 1926 in Naytahwaush, Minnesota to George Sargent and Sophia (Bellanger) Sargent Lorenson.  She attended schools in Mahnomen, Minnesota.  She married Royce E. Graves, Sr. on May 27, 1947 in Redby, Minnesota and they had 7 children.  She spent the last 63 years of her life living on the Red Lake Indian reservation, where she and her husband owned and operated the Redby Confectionery and Redby Pool Hall, which was a great hang-out for teenagers in the 1960’s.  Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their friends were the light of her life, and she always made room in her house for children other than her own.  Bernadine was a great sports fan all her life, and encouraged her children and grandchildren to actively participate in sports, so she could be on the sidelines coaching and cheering them on.

Bernadine is survived by sons:  A. Gary (Victoria) Graves, Royce E. (Diana) Graves, Jr., Joseph (Jill) Graves, all of Red Lake, Minnesota, daughters: Eloise (Gordon) Jallen, Pinewood, Minnesota, and Darlene (Adrian Sr.) Lussier, Red Lake, Minnesota, grandson Rawn  Graves, Fort Stewart, GA, and nephew Francis (Rusty) Smith, Redby, MN whom she raised.  Brothers:  Gerald (Gloria) Sargent, Bemidji, Minnesota;  Frank Sargent, Bemidji, Minnesota, and Ervin (Marion) Sargent, Cass Lake, Minnesota, sisters: Jean Smith, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Annette Oshie, Bemidji, Minnesota.  Sister-in-law Ruth Graves, Bemidji, Minnesota, 32 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Preston Graves, daughter Janet Graves, a grandson, and her brothers, Donald Sargent, Earl (Buck) Sargent, Sr., and William Sargent, sisters, Donna Mae Lupinksi and Marylice Yzaguirre.
