Information on school teacher

If you can help, thank you, if not please pass my request on to the
correct person(s).   I believe that a Margaret Tuckey was a school teacher on the Red Lake Indian Reservation - perhaps in the late 1930s and early 1940's.  She
was the sister of my Step Father and I'd like to learn more about her,
specifically about her days and years as a teacher there.
Is there an individual or and organization (School Board, School
Historian ...) that I could contact who may be able to provide that
information?

Thank you for your consideration,

Dear Red Lake Net News,

My name is Paula (Cliver) Traywick. I am a former student of Johnson Loud when he taught in Seymour, Wisconsin.
The last I heard was that he lives in Red Lake, that he moved back to be with his people. If there is any possible way that I have reached the correct place to locate him, I would sure like to hear from him.
This may be a little weird...I can't find any other way to find him.
He was a great inspiration to me.
If I found the right place....could you let him know that I would like to know how he is.

Mr. Barrett,

My name is Daniel Peaine. I am the son of Isaac Peaine, an enrolled member of the Wisconsin Chippewa, now living in Michigan. I am not sure how you can help but here goes. I am looking to find out which Tribal Council I go to be notified when I am able to enroll myself. I just found my father after being separated after 37 years. It is an occasion I will never forget. He did say the roster is closed right now but did not say who to talk with.  I am hoping to touch base with this council and get some news sent to Portland, Oregon where I reside. Any information you can send me would be helpful. I got your name off the Red Lake Tribal Council's website and I am reaching out. My E-Address is DANUMATION@GMAIL.COM . If you need any other contact info just send a note to my e-address. Thanks in advance.

Daniel J. Peaine.

Dear Mr. Barrett,

Boozhoo! I am writing to you regarding a project I am
doing for my Anishinabeg class. My assignment is to
understand some aspects of the Ojibwe people in order to
be more effective (or a better word would be empathetic)
in relation to my field of study, E-crime.

I have been researching endlessly since Sunday, June 17th.
I wanted to research before I even tried to interview
anyone. My professor wants us either to write a research
paper or do an interview. I haven't decided which I would
do. If I interview, I will need to call at least 3 people
with the same 5 questions. I am still thinking about what
I would ask.

I was wondering who you are and if you would be able to
assist me. I have been focusing on MN and the Ojibwe
people: public law 280, Nett Lake may have effectively
retroceded from public law 280, and jurisdictional issues
(confusing! or Amanji idog!). Well, obviously Red Lake is
an exception in MN and I thought I could ask you why; I
read somewhere and concluded that during the time of
public law 280, Red Lake effectively demonstrated they had
their own law enforcement and court.

I will appreciate any help or guidance you can offer me.
Please contact me through my e-mail:

Thank you and Gi-zhawendaagoz misawa goawegwen ayaawi'an,

Hello,

My name is Lorene, my e-mail is
isanwin@yahoo.com, please respond if you have any ideas.

When I was 9 yrs old my father, who I don't know so well, told me that I have an older sister in the Red Lake area. He told me her name, but I was only nine and don't remember it now. I spoke to him again when I was 19yrs old and asked him what her name was and what her mothers name is as well. Sorry to say that
because of alcohol and maybe some drug use, he does not remember. He said he had all the information written down, but the house burnt down with everything in it.

I'm currently 27, and I'm thinking that she would be about 28-31yrs old. My father told me that he and her mother met at a pow-wow, and "snagged". He said he knew nothing about her until after she was born and I think he may have even seen her once. My family doesn't know about her or maybe they just don't want to talk about it. You know how loyalties can go. I've started my own family and so have my sisters, I'm just curious. I only told one of my siblings about her. WELL, not sure what good this will do, but I know how small communities are, and I thought it might be worth a shot to ask someone who knows the community and knows news. My fathers name is Alcott, he is from Sisseton area. He will be 50 this year I think. I don't really remember, but I swear my sisters name began with a J or G sound. I don't know if that information is worth anything but it's all I have. I don't even know if she knows that my dad is her dad, or maybe was raised by someone else.

Sorry that I'm all questions, but that's what's been on my mind every day since I was nine.

Please contact me,
Lorene (Brant) Clark

To Whom it May Concern;

I was wondering if you could help me find my little brother. My Mother is under going some serious health problems, we are trying to find all our siblings and we are'nt having the best of Luck. If You are able to help us here is the 411 you will need.

We are looking for my little brother, Dale Clinton White. My Mother is Carolyne White, she lives in N.E Minneapolis, She is battling a brain tumor. She would like the Family to get together soon in case the worse were to happen.

We are also looking for the following siblings if anyone were to know their where abouts:
                                  David J. White
                                  Dakota W. Bluebird
Stephanie M. White-She goes by her adopted name "Jose", she works at the Turtle Lake Casino in Wisconsin.

I wish I could give you more information, but I was also adopted at a young age, and just recently found the family. And Mom can't remember anything else.

I would Greatly appreciate it if you could help us reunite our family for my mothers sake. Like I said, in case something were to happen to her before, she could see and talk to her children again.
                                                              Thank You Much,

Hey i'm from Red Lake, I've been living here my whole life and I was wondering...Does Red Lake have there own song or anthem?  Just like the United States has the National Anthem, since we are sovereign we should have our own song or anthem.  If there is something like that, e-mail me and let me know.

Hi,

My name is Joyce Sheffield (Schmidt).  I am trying to locate an old roommate of mine - Rae Anne McKenzie.  I lived with Rae Anne in the early 60's.  My last contact with her around 1975.  At that time she lived in Minneapolis MN and had become a paralegal and had a daughter named Raina.  Rae Anne was born on the Red Lake Reservation.  I found one referral to her on your website in an obituary for her sister Phyllis.

Is there any way you have of getting in touch with her?  I would like to get her phone number, address, email address or anything so I could contact her.  If you want to forward this email to her that would be okay also or get a message to her to call me.  763-434-3582.  Thanks for your help.

Hello Michael

We would very much like to get in contact with the elders of the
Chaboyea family.

In our quest to find a link between the Chaboyer line of Manitoba and
the Chaboillez fur traders of Michimackinac and Pembina, we have come
across an Alexander (Shibous) Chaboillez in the Red Lake area.  We believe his
father may have been the son of Charles Chaboillez, and that the present day
Chaboyea families descend from this line.

For more information about our genealogy research, please visit our
website.

Many thanks for your time.

Mr. Barrett

I am wondering if you can direct me to someone who performs Chippawa ground blessing ceremonies near Seattle in the state of Washington ?  I am having a memorial for my late husband.

Thank you,

Pat

Mr. Barrett,

I located your contact address on the Red Lake News website, and believe it to be within your power to see that honor is bestowed upon these two men.

I had reason tonight to check out the "Officer Down Memorial Page" located at
www.odmp.org on the Internet where I discovered that Sergeant Lussier is not listed.  Going to their link to submit an officer I filled in all the blanks that I could, but I notice that unless the officer died within the past year documentation is required and as an outsider I surely wouldn't have the ability to acquire the documentation from the tribe.  Additionally, I discovered that the Security Guard at the school may also qualify for inclusion. I can't gather the official documentation to see these men honored, but I believe that you (or your organization) can.

I have no "dog in this fight," there is nothing in it for me regardless of whether or not these men are honored other than the fact that I saw what I believe to be honors due and attempted to ensure they were recognized.  I am a disabled Gulf War Veteran of the US Marine Corps and have many Native American friends, but none at Red Lake.  It is my belief that ANYone who gives his/her life in defense of our country should be honored for eternity, and in my humble opinion these two men certainly qualify as they died defending our children at school.

I ask that you go to the above web site and decide as one who is not an outsider for yourself the merits.  If, in your judgment, it is determined that inclusion in the ODMP would be a good thing, I ask that you carry on where I left off to ensure these two Native Americans are included as law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

Thank you for your time.

I am forwarding to you the reply that I received from the half-completed data I submitted to ODMP. I submitted what I knew to be factual, and then let you in on what I had started...

From what I know personally based on my many visits to the various reservations, including Red Lake, there is basically no such thing as an off-duty police officer. They all have scanners and such, and upon hearing of an incident or requirement all congregate as required to deal with whatever situation is thrown in their path. I am quite sure that you see even better than I the scenario as I envision it on that day, and leave it once again in your hands.  I sincerely hope I did nothing that might stand in your way with the data I originally submitted, but also realize that since it was the truth you have nothing to worry about except overcoming red tape and such...

Mr. Smith,

Thanks for contacting The Officer Down Memorial Page.

We are aware of the death of Sergeant Lussier, but from all details known to us, his death, while tragic, was not ruled in the line-of-duty.  The criteria for inclusion on our site require a line-of-duty determination (by taking action or performance of duty).

If you are aware of other facts that may change our determination, please let me know and we will look into them.

Our full criteria can be found at:  http://www.odmp.org/info/criteria.php

Steve Varner

Dear Mr Barret

My name is Sean Casey I live in the south of France and at present I'm attempting to write a biographical account of a man, since deceased, who may be known to you, Larry Cloud Morgan. The people that were closest to the man are strangely reticent to impart information to me for reasons difficult to discern. Given the man is dead I would hardly think it would be problematic from the point of view of representing a danger to the late LCM and find it churlish to say the least. This may be endemic to native Americans given the history but I am writing to praise the man, not to insult his memory. Given that you are connected to the culture and may or may not be a native American yourself, it's possible you are in a position to throw some light as to the reason why they are reluctant to talk about a man that from my perspective needs talking about. He was clearly a man who commanded a great deal of respect and did much to earn said respect, which is why I find his life and struggle so interesting. He came to my attention through my younger brother who met him way back in 1991 when they were both paying a visit to Libya. LCM was there along with many of his fellow tribesmen and women, to accept a donation from Qaddafi  to pay legal fee's in order that they could carry through the struggle to win back the rights of the Indian nations. Suffice to say it was an extremely interesting encounter and had a lasting effect on my brother who, only a couple of years ago, told me the story. As an Indian publication you may be interested in looking into as to why his fellow Indians are so reluctant to talk about one of their more notable leaders. I hope I've peaked your interest and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Regards Sean

Mr. Barrett,

Thank you for your time today.  Again it's nice to be able to use the internet in this way.

As I'd mentioned I've had some questions recently from staff members who have expressed an interest in learning or hearing more about the Red Lake Nation.  Although I've heard many variations......I'd like to provide them with something that is written and comes from someone who knows, so that they get accurate facts.  If you can help me by providing me with a written resource that would be great.

Another question that I've had is regarding the Seven Clans logo.  As I'd mentioned, I've seen a logo that features the Seven Clans including the Bear Clan, Moose clan and several others.  But my memory escapes me on the exact facts and even if those two are in fact part of the Seven Clans. Either way.......I've seen a poster that gave the Clans name and description with brief history someplace.  If I could find that poster, I'd love to display one in each of our buildings.

My final questions was concerning sweat lodges.  I've had several requests over my years here at TRF schools for them.  But I've always come up short in providing a resourse for my students.

Thanks again for your work......and please stay in touch.  If you have anything  you'd like to send our way, please feel free.

Thanks,

Hello.

My name is Judy Major and I live in The Pas, Manitoba. I am a Ojibway woman from Big Grassy First Nation in Ontario. I came across your website and started looking in your obituaries (I don't know why). I came across Michael Boyd's obit and I was very shocked. I was really good friends with both Michael and Dawn when my family and I travelled powwow country. When we started hanging around with each other, we were teenyboppers and stayed friends into our teen years, but I did not hear of Michael's passing. I have just learned that my family knew of what had happened but did not want to tell me because of my close friendship with Michael and Dawn. I would really like to get in touch with Dawn, but all I know is that she is now living in Lame Deer, Montana. If there is anyone you know of that can give me her mailing address or even an email address, I really would appreciate it, as I would really like to convey my condolences to her. She was a very close friend. My email address is

Thank you and meegwetch,

Dear Mr. Barrett:

I have been looking for an old high school friend of mine that was from the Minneapolis area but was enrolled in Leech Lake.

Her name is Shirley Lynn Drouillard, she graduated from Flandreau Indian School in May of 1972.

Any information you can offer is appreciated, or if you can direct me to a person or business that can help me that would be great, too.

Thank you very much.

Mr. Barrett,

my name is Jim Stone and I live in Lexington Nebr. The reason I am writing you is to see if you can help me locate a long lost friend from the Viet Nam war. I served in A Co 3/21 196th Light Infantry and we had a gut in our platoon who's last name was Alger and he was from Northern Minnesota, Red Lake Indian Reservation. I have a tape that he is on and this is what he describes as his home. He left our outfit in Feb 68 to go to a new outfit being formed. It was the 123 Aviation unit. I don't know his first name as we all went by last name or nickname (his was chief). He was a wonderful guy and I have been looking for him for years to reconnect. I was Sgt Stone then (Stoney). If any way you can help me reconnect as we have reunions every two years I would be in your dept forever.

Thank you.

Dear Mr. Barrett,

My name is Teresa Elm - Mitchell and I was wondering if you have any idea where I may find an ol chum of mine. I attended Flandreau Indian School back in the early 1980's and was looking to find a tribal member of the Red lake band, her name at the time was Diane White, I am not sure if she had married and changed her name. If you know how I may get ahold of her please inform me. You may forward this message on to her or tell her to call me at my place of work, 715-588-3333

I do appreciate it, I would love to hear from her.

Hello,

I found a backpack with a wallet and lots of personal items. The ID in the backpack is for Lloyd Redkettle. Apparently the backpack was stolen. I am trying to return the backpack to Lloyd who apparently has ties to Red Lake. If you have any contacts who might be able to give Lloyd the message, please tell them to tell Lloyd to call me to get his stuff.

Hey MIke

Do you know if the new Nike Air Native N7 shoes are available anywhere up there? If so, who can a person contact to purchase a pair? If not, think someone up there needs to get on the ball. LOL (kidding)

Hi.

My name is Ryanne Underhill. Currently I am working on a project that is looking at the effects of historical Native American education experiences (specifically boarding schools) and the effects these experiences have on the current attitudes and achievement gap with in the Native community. It is my hope to, as accurately as possible, convey the effects these such schools had on your cultures both historically, and how they continue to shape experiences now. I respectfully ask, would you be willing to direct me to any such resources. I would very appreciative.
Thank you,

Hello, Mr. Barrett.

My name is Amanda Hollar. I was a friend of Bob Barrett's. I do not know if he was related to you, because I know his relatives on the Norris side of the family. I am doing a paper for my school on Red Lake. I live in Georgia and have visited Red Lake with Alberta Norris, Bob's granny and her family back in 1999. I was there for the pow-wow in July of 1999. I think that you do a wonderful job with this rlnn.com website and enjoy visiting the site.

I was wondering if there is any information that I can get from you regarding some of the culture, traditions, and ways of life on the reservation. The paper is for Sociology and I chose to do my paper on Red Lake because I loved it there and felt a sense of peace while I was there. Red Lake has and will always remain in my heart, as will Bob. I was saddened at the news of his death a few years ago. He has certainly not been forgotten by me.

I would appreciate any help that you may give to me regarding the above mentioned information. While I was in Red Lake I met Keveon Kingbird, who was one of Bob's best friends. I haven't spoken with Keveon in some time, but would like to ask him some questions as well about the Battle River group and tell a little about the history of the Native Drum Groups.

Thank you in advance for your time and help. I look forward to hearing back from you. My email address is
akn76@hotmail.com

Sincerely, Amanda Hollar

Hello Michael,

I am writing to you because I came across your website while researching the seven clans casino of the Red Lake Chippewa. I was wondering if you could share any impact that this casino has had on the people of Red Lake, both native and non native. I'm specifically looking at how the casino has helped or hurt the community of Red Lake, both the Chippewa tribe and the non native community members.

If you would be so kind as to write back to me, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for your time,
Allison Lapham University of Minnesota

Dear Native American Tribes:

I am doing a paper reguarding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. I am looking for reactions and opinions of Native Americans to this Act. Searching the internet it is hard to find things about the true traditional culture of Native Americans. I decided to contact as many tribes as possible to get an insight of the feelings that NAPGRA has created. I would love to have any information you are willing to give. Hope fully I get a response from as many as possible.

Thanks for your time.

Hi, I am a program coordinator in a group home.  And, I have a client who is part Ojibwe from the Red Lake area.  He now lives in Hastings MN.  He is 19 years old.  I am wondering if you have any good ideas of events or festivals that I can take him to in the Hastings/Metro area.

I have recently started to search for these festivals on the internet.  I also saw a recent advertisement in the Minneapolis Pioneer Press that listed about 20 of these events.  Yet, the one that was in our area I tried to call and get info about and no one new anything about this Native American Festival.  I have also checked for any of these events in Hastings itself and it appears the V.A. Home did have an annual Native American Festival yet they no longer do this.  So, I have been running into some dead ends.  If you are aware of any web sites or newpapers that I could buy or go to to get better info, I woiuld really appreciate it.

My goal is to simply help this client undertand his culture better.  Again, he is from the Red Lake area but it is very difficult for us to drive him that far.  Therefore, this is the reason I am looking for festival down in this area.  I also have calls into the Mystic Lake Casino and Treasure Island.

Anyway, thanks for any help you can provide,

Ryan

Hello,

I'm a student in Sioux Falls South Dakota and I am currently doing a project on the Leech lake band of Ojibwe and am having trouble finding information about the tribe. We are working in groups and divided the project into 4ths and I received more of the potential negatives such as diabetes, alcohol, teen pregnancy. I was wondering if there was anybody you could put me in contact with that could tell me more about this particular tribe and all of the programs they have for their community. Thank you

This is probably a strange request to you but inportant to me.   My brother married Sande Stein she took his name of Libou and they were later divorced.  She lived with her new husband Barry Armoto and she finally had a son Mark.  She drove a school bus for your district.  We kept in touch for many years until they moved to upstate New York.  Her son called me aunt.  I do not know what happened but they started moving around and we lost contact.  I am sure part of it is i use my cell as my main number and i am not listed.  I have tried to contact her in several ways and now trying this.  I know when they left your city they did not sell the house.  I worry because she was not well (had open hear surgery) before her on was born.  He should be about 11 now.

If you know anything plese either forward it to me or just give her or her husband this messsage

We miss you and want to stay in touch, Brenda Libou Lesh and Sandi Libou Rich
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

My name is Laura Roberts and I live in Delano, Minnesota.  In English, we're doing a research project, and my partner and I chose to do the Old Crossing Treaty.  I have a lot of family in Red Lake and I thought it would be interesting.

I was wondering if you could pass along any information about the Old Crossing Treaty or give me contact information to somebody who does.  I appreciate your time.

Thanks in advance,
Laura

I just wanted to wish everyone in Red Lake, a very merry Christmas, and Happy New year. I was sad to leave, and look forward to maintaining friendships. I also want to take this opportunity, to thank the Red Lake Band, for allowing me to work in your great Nation, with your children and your families. Should anyone want to remain in contact, please email me, I have always been a person who enjoys meeting new people all over. Again thank you, and Best wishes to all.
