Author Honors Ishi, the Last of His Tribe

Eighty-eight years after the death of Ishi, the last Yahi, award-winning author Marlo Schalesky brings his story to life in the newly released novel Only the Wind Remembers. Focusing on the final years of Ishis life, Only the Wind Remembers spins a fictional tale that relies heavily on the historical account of Ishi, who walked out of the woods near Oroville, California on August 29, 1911. Ishi spent the rest of his at the Museum of Anthropology in San Francisco, which is now located on the campus at UC Berkeley.

At the time, Ishi was considered a miracle for modern anthropology. Even after his death in 1916, the influence of Ishi on the modern world lived on.

Now, Ishi has come to life again in the pages of Schalesky
s novel.

I was drawn to the mystery of this man who was the last of his tribe, whose true name was never known, says Schalesky.

As a native of Northern California, where the Yahi once made their home, Schalesky wanted to honor the memory of a Native American legend in print.

Ishi is an important part of Native history, says Schalesky. In Only the Wind Remembers, I wanted to introduce people all over the world to a slice of that history.

Only the Wind Remembers is the spine tingling story of one man's crossover into the alien world of the white man, and into a multi-layered mystery that culminates in a multi-layered surprise ending, says Donna Conger of Inspirations e-zine.

Schalesky is also the author of three previous books.
