Red Lake’s season ends with 67-49 loss to East Grand Forks
The Red Lake Warriors traveled to the University of Minnesota, Crookston to play East Grand Forks on Saturday, March 13, 2004, and it would be a time to avenge a loss to the Green Wave in early March at Red Lake. Of course that was easier said than done, as East Grand Forks was quick on both offense and defense, played a solid defense, and could be very accurate in their shooting. Red Lake needed a good game in both defense and offense in order to upset the Green Wave. East Grand Forks scored first in the opening quarter, and lead 10-2 early on, leading up until Challenge Johnson nailed a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go to give the Warriors their first lead, 14-13. The Warriors got a steal down at the other end, but an offensive charging foul gave the ball right back to the Green Wave, and an open shot underneath allowed them to retake the lead 15-14 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, over a minute passed with each team unable to connect to the hoop, until Goodwin tied the game up by hitting 1-2 freethrows, 15-15. The Green Wave connected for a long 2-pointer to take the lead, and after a Red Lake turnover, went up by 4 points, 19-15. Merkins for EGF nailed a 3-pointer giving them a 7 point lead, 22-15. Red Lake missed two bunnies underneath, then had the ball stolen by Merkins during their full court press, missing an easy layup, but Larson was there on the offensive rebound to go up by 9, 24-15. Another missed Red Lake 3-point attempt allowed Needleman to put the Green Wave up 26-15. The Warriors could only come up with 6 points in the entire second quarter, while EGF put in 14 and led 29-20 at the half. Red Lake had 10 turnovers in the first half. Red Lake kept up with the Green Wave in the third quarter, although starting off with 2 quick turnovers, but still trailed by 11, 45-34 at the quarter’s end. East Grand Forks continued to run hard, capitalizing on Red Lake’s cold shooting, and took the victory 67-49. The win allowed the Green Wave to advance in the tournament, while the loss for Red Lake ended their season. Charles Goodwin led the Warriors with 8 rebounds and 17 points, and was the only Warrior in double figures. Preston Graves put in 9 points with 3 rebounds, Challenge Johnson had 4 rebounds and 7 points, Robin kelly 6 points, Clayton Roberts 5 assists and 5 points, Delwyn Brown 2 rebounds and 4 points, and Darrell Crowe 2 points and 5 assists.
