As their reward for turning in their homework and not missing more than one or two days during the trimester, Red Lake Elementary students enjoyed a day of fishing out on the lake near Sandy Beach on March 24, 2004.  This was the third such reward trip provided to RLES students for their attendance and homework.   Those earning the trip last trimester were treated to a trip to The Waterpark in Thief River Falls, and before that,The Pumpkin Patch and a movie in Blackduck.  It is a nice reward for the students, and the parents should also be applauded for helping and making sure their children do the work.
Donna Prentice, fishing with her grandson, landed this good sized Northern Pike on the lake near Sandy Beach area.  It was the biggest fish caught during the day long event.  Although there were less than 100 perch caught, they were all cleaned, cooked and enjoyed by students, staff, parents, and volunteers.

Red Lake Elementary Students Spend a day on the Lake

Do you know what happens to the students at Red Lake Elementary students when they do their homework? At the end of every quarter the students who complete 90% of their Reading and Math homework receive an incentive trip. On March 24th, 70 students who achieved the goal for the third quarter spent the day on Lower Red Lake ice fishing.

There were a lot of students who have never been ice fishing before, so it was very educational for them. We could have not asked for a better day to be out on the lake. The sun was shining, fish were biting, and the event was a success. We had some students who caught their first fish and some that learned how to bait their own hook. What a better way to teach survival skills, patience and working together!

When all the perch were caught our Master Filleters Jeff Kingbird and Greg Jordan cleaned the fish and cooked them up. This gave the students an opportunity to see what happens with the fish after they are caught and also taste their own fish. We would like to thank the following for making the 1st annual Red Lake Elementary ice fishing extravaganza a success. Red Lake DNR, Red Lake Community Members, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Teachers, Administration, Transportation, Northland Fishing Tackle, Today’s Tackle, Tabers Bait, L&M Fleet, Gander Mountain, Walmart, Pamida, and Kmart. Without your contributions this event would have not been a success!

Thanks again for your support,
