Four repeaters on Northland basketball team

Red Lake’s Rutledge Coach of the Year

     Four players returned to the Northland Conference All-Star basketball team announced this week by secretary Kyle Duclos of Walker.

     Champion Red Lake gained four berths on the team.

     WHA and Cass Lake-Bena, who shared second, gained four and three berths respectively.

     Kelliher-Northome added two while Nevis and Laporte had one.

     Returning from the 2003 team were Byron Ninham of CLB, Charles Goodwin of Red Lake, Charlie Schoeck of Walker and Adam Nistler of Kelliher-Northome.

     Challenge Johnson, Clayton Roberts and Robyn Kelly completed the Red Lake quartet.

Joining Schoeck from WHA were Keane Johnson, Mike Lien and Mark Lissick. Anthony Robinson and Tyler Wittner were the other CLB picks.

     Justin Gilge joined Nistler from K-N while Zach Halfman of Nevis and Kaleb Bessler of Laporte rounded out the cast.

     Another 10 players drew honorable mention including Adam Beck and Rick Loer of Blackduck, Ryan Evans and Jesse White of Kelliher-Northome, Jamie Day of Laporte and Buster Graves of Red Lake.

     Ninham, the leagues scoring leader, earned Most Valuable Player honors.

     Red Lakes Johnson was named Rookie of the Year while the WarriorsBill Rutledge was voted Coach of the Year.

     Red Lake won the title by a game over WHA and CLB with a 10-2 mark. Red Lake also captured the B Team championship.

     Ninham was an easy winner in the scoring race, finishing with a 25.7 average to 18.3 for Goodwin and 16.3 for Challenge Johnson. Gilge and Halfman rounded out the top five.

     Ninham also topped the rebound list with a 9.9 average to 8.7 for Bessler and 7.3 for Graves.

     Corey Littlewolf of CLB took the assist title with a 5.9 average t6o 5.0 for Red Lakes Roberts. Evans was tops in steals with 3.1 per game to 2.9 for Littlewolf.

     WHA and Blackduck dropped their opening games in the Class 2A playoffs. Red Lake bowed in the second round.

     In Class A, CLB and Nevis bowed in the quarterfinals of the 6A-East tournament after Nevis won a play-in game. Laporte bowed out in that round.

     Kelliher-Northome lost its opener in the 8A East meet.
