One of the Red Lake Bass Brat's mottos is, GET HOOKED ON FISHING, NOT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL, but there's a lot more involved than that--there's a lot of fishing and learning about fishing.

Formed by Darwin and Eileen Sumner last year, Darwin stated in his 2004 newsletter that there were reasons they have to have rules and expectations.  "We want nothing but the best for your kids and we want the Brass Brats Club to be the best it can be."

"Eileen and I really enjoy going out and teaching the kids about fishing,"  Darwin said in the letter.  "We have fun right along with them.  It does take a lot of work, energy and personal time, such as leave from work, in picking kids up.  We do not get paid nor do we expect to.  We do this for the kids.  Our reward is seeing them catch fish and the hope that someone can learn enough to go further in this exploding sport and maybe have a future in it.  There are great futures in this sport and that is why I feel these expectations are important.  We as parents have the responsibility to teach our children about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco abuse, as well as staying in school, respecting other people and their belongings.  It will help them develop into a healthy adult...."

The Club also encourages parents who would like to be more active with the group, and even if they would like to learn more about fishing themselves.

The Red Lake Bass Brats took to Fuller's Lake on Thursday, June 17, 2004, with one of their first fishing events of the year, and having been out on this lake for the first time, it was very relaxing and tranquil.  A person could easily sit out there in a boat and fish the day away.  And there seemed to be plenty of fish for anglers.

From about 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the Bass Brats fished for bass, weighting them first, before releasing the fish back into the lake.  There were two anglers per boat and they kept track of the fish they caught.  They would tally up the combined weight of each fish in the end and that would determine the winner.
Taking first place was Justin Jourdain with 9 lbs 11.5 oz; Michele Sumner was second with 7 lbs. 7.5 oz.; April Kingbird third with 4 lbs. 12 oz.; Bryan Stately fourth with with 1 lb. 12 oz.; and
Jarvis King fifth with 1 lb. 3 oz.

The biggest bass caught on the day was a 4 lb. 5 ouncer by Justin Jourdain.

Jourdain had also posed with one of the fish he had caught, but forgot to weigh it before he released it.

RED LAKE BASS BRATS

The goals of the Bass Brats are:

1.   Our number 1 goal is safety.
2.   To teach and encourage basic fishing skills.
3.   Encourage a drug/alcohol free lifestyle.
4.   Enjoy the outdoors and have fun.
5.   Promote education (maintain a 'C' average in school to fish beyond club level, such as state and national competitions.
The rules for the Bass Brats are:

1.   All youth must wear a lifejacket.  If you don't own one, we can loan you one and are available on a first serve basis.  You cannot 'save' one.  If you show up for a fishing meeting without a lifejacket or we have none left, you will not be able to fish.
2.   You must follow water safety rules.  No playing around in the boats.
3.   You are expected to help launch and bring in the boats.
4.   Help clean up boats and the fishing shoreline area.
5.   Please eat before coming to a meeting.  We hope to have snacks.  If the parents can agree, maybe we can rotate.
6.   Make sure your hook is secure until we start fishing and before we land.  We don't want anyone getting hooked.
7.  Scoring of fish will go by length, and the number of fish caught (5 largest fish).  High score is 15.

Parents/Guardians, please review the rules with your child so that they know them.
The fishing rods ($65.00 each) pictured were donated to the Red Lake Bass Brats by the Excipio Consulting Firm of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Pro Tour Baits and Northland tackle of Bemidji donated some of the tackle, and Thunderbird Graphics, also of Bemidji, donated the Bass Brats T-shirts
