Woman searching for past
Some time ago a lady wrote me with the following information. Her name was Betty and she
said she was born in Buffalo, New York to Native parents and in the middle of the night, given to
a white-skinned man after his own baby died from a disease.
She said her parents went to court and proved that she was their baby. This story was also in
all the newspapers, even after the hospital admitted they made the mistake.
“I have been searching a very long time,” she wrote. “I also had a brother named Dwaine
Heltom from Prairie Island, Minnesota. He was with a Minnesota drum group in Columbus, Ohio
and had contacted the group, leaving many messages. No one told my brother I was searching for
him. My brother has passed away 6 months ago. I also have a sister, Isabelle, with the Dennis
Banks’ group I was told and would like to place an od or this story in your newspapers in the
hope someone would let her know to contact me.”
The dates of this article–which rlnn.com hasn’t been able to track down at this time–could be
between 1940-1945. Betty said her actual birthdate was sort of unknown at this time. The
hospital name may have been the “E.J. Meyers Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, New York, where
Betty was born.
If anyone has information, please email me and I will pass this information on to her.
