Red Lake's Tuesday Night Horseshoe League has successful first year

Red Lake’s Tuesday Night Horseshoe League

By Michael Barrett

Red Lake Net News

In June of 2004, the Red Lake Tuesday Night Horseshoe League began their season, and after ten weeks, they held their final playoffs on Tuesday, August 17th.

Beginning at the end of June of this year, 10 teams consisting of 4 players per team, formed the league and have played every Tuesday evening at the Tammy Cobenais home in Little Rock.

Tammy used to play in a horseshoe league at the Eagles Club in Bemidji for a couple of years and got the idea to try and form a league of their own in Red Lake. She met with others who were interested in playing, and she developed a horseshoe throwing area in her yard.

Cobenais said the league went well for its first year, although she was doing most of the work. They have elected a President of the league for the upcoming year, Billy Jack Schoenborn, and have developed rules and bylaws along the way. A person pays $5.00 a night, and those funds are used for trophies and cash winnings at the end of the season. It is similar to a bowling league with handicap scoring.

At their year-end banquet at the Cobenais home, they had a feast and trophies and awards were handed out for the year.

Close Enuf took first place on the year, with Deadlyz in second and D. R.’s were third. Close Enuf team members include: Gus Schoenborn, Tammy Cobenais, Dawn Barrett and Wally Holstein. Deadlyz team members are: Vicki Johnson, Brad Johnson, Mitch Johnson and Dan Johnson. Bill Schoenborn, Bryan Schoenborn, Ed Maxwell and Chopper Fairbanks are the D. R.’s team members.

The Most Improved Players this year were Kara Lussier and Raymond “Burr” Strong with each 6 points, while the High Games were recorded by Tammy Cobenais (52) and Dan Johnson (55). Bill Schoenborn nailed the Most Ringers (233) for the guys, with Tammy Cobenais having the most for the girls (149).

Also receiving trophies for the low games were Buffy Barrett (2) and Jon Carlson, Sr. (2).

Other teams in the league are Across the Lake; Joe Medina, Itto Kingird, Dean Kingbird and Ringo Smith; the English’s, Al English, Cheryl English, Lori English and AnnMarie English; Strongs, Brandon Strong, Burr Strong, Mike Strong and Buffy Barrett; BOT, Rossie Bee Barrett, Darwin Lussier Jr., Joe Bee Barrett and Stephanie Cobenais; the Ringers, Jon Carlson, Donald Brun, Barry Oakgrove and Kara Lussier; and Da Bombs, Clinton Donnell, Lawrence Lussier and Lisa Sumner.

In the playoffs, the handicap came through for upsets. The top three teams were eliminated in the first found, and the playoffs ended with the team with the highest handicap winning the championship
