Red Lake Bass Busters host Jr.
State Bassmaster Tournament
On August 13, 2004, the Red Lake Bass Busters Club will be hosting the Minnesota Junior
Bass Tournament on Lakes Movil and Turtle.
Thursday August 12th we will hold a pre-tournament meeting at the Bemidji Gander Mountain
Store. All the youth from around the state will be paired up with one another. An adult will drive
the boat to fishing spots selected by the young “fisher people”. Each youth will get to pick the
fishing spot for ½ of the time, and they will get to fish from the front of the boat which is often
the favorite spot. The one in the front gets first crack at the new spots, so sometimes they get
more bites, but not always.
The blast-off is at 6:00am from Kohl’s Resort, the weigh-in will be at 2:00 p.m. at Kohl’s
also. Red Lake Substance abuse is donating pizza at the pre-tournament meeting and sandwiches
after the weigh-in.
Red Lake will be well represented by 3 young people. One of them will fish in the younger age
category, which is 11-14 years, and two will fish in the older age category 15-18 years.
The youngest fisherman will be Jarvis King, grandson of Jim King, Littlerock. The two older
ones are Michele Sumner, daughter of Darwin Sumner, Littlerock and Gwen Johns, Red Lake;
and Justin Jourdain, son of Gary and Wendy Jourdain, Red Lake.
This is the 3rd year that Justin has fished at the state level. All three of the kids have been out
on the lakes several times in the last few weeks; Darwin Sumner has worked hard to make sure
that the kids have some spots that they know have fish.
Each year the state tournament is held in a different part of the state, and the fishing clubs are
taking turns hosting it to allow some of the youth to have a “home” lake advantage. Last year we
went all the way to Mankato to fish. The year before that we fished Forest Lake, not far from
Minneapolis.
The kids are eager to fish and we hope for a good showing. It would be great if one of our
kids went to “The Classic.” The classic is like the world series of fishing.
Please come out and see our kids weigh-in at Kohl’s. Kohl’s Resort is off County Road 15 on
County 22.
We would like to thank the following sponsors who donated tackle and technical support,
Excipio Consulting, Red Lake Substance Abuse, Northland Tackle and Pro Tour baits.
