Sex offender committed for evaluation
By Molly Miron Pioneer Editor Beltrami County District Judge Paul Benshoof ruled Tuesday that John Beaulieu III, 20, is a sexually dangerous person. The judge ordered Beaulieu to be committed to the Minnesota Sex Offender Program in St. Peter for a 60-day evaluation. Benshoof will review the evaluation report and conduct a hearing on May 24 to determine whether Beaulieu should be committed for an indefinite period. A supervisor of Beltrami County Human Services Adult Services had petitioned the court for the civil commitment. The petition states that Beaulieu has been convicted of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. During an interview with a psychologist in 1999, Beaulieu allegedly reported having sexually abused boys. He testified at the March 2 trial for civil commitment that he had molested 10 boys 42 times. The petition continues that Beaulieu said he was unable to stop his predatory behavior. The investigation by the Red Lake Police Department indicated that Beaulieu had been sexually abusing boys for years, at least from 1997-1999, on the Red Lake Reservation. The petition states the victims include boys ranging in age from 5 years old to 14 years old. He told a physician in 1999 at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Red Lake he had been sexually abusing minor males, including cousins and neighbors, for several years. He also is accused of having sexual contact with other people in a treatment center. Beaulieu was adjudicated a delinquent for the offense of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. He also pleaded guilty to making terroristic threats as a result of an incident on Nov. 1, 2003, at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. The petition requests that Beaulieu be committed to the Minnesota Sex Offender Program at St. Peter as a sexually dangerous person and/or a sexual psychopathic personality. Assistant County Attorney Eric Schieferdecker represented the petitioner, Beltrami County Human Services. Peter D. Bulens represented Beaulieu. |
