Volume 5 No. 5 Red Lake Elementary February and March, 2005
Boozoo from the Principal:
Here we are coming to the end of the third quarter and hoping for Spring to come soon! Students and teachers are gearing up for the state tests in April. Starting this year fourth graders will be tested in math and reading as well as the third and fifth grades. The tests are scheduled in the last two weeks in April, from the 18th through the 29th. It is very important that students come to school on these dates and be ready for the 4-5 days of testing. Classroom teachers will be sending information home on the exact days and times of the testing.
We continue to offer new activities and opportunities at school. Simmie Ng, our new music teacher, is trying to start up an elementary band program. She ran a band club in the Fall and approximately 20 students came for most of the lessons. Playing an instrument uses many learning skills such as math, memorization, hand-eye coordination, reading, patience and practice, just to mention a few. If your child is interested, please contact her for a great experience.
Our last parent-teacher conferences are set for Thursday, April 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. Lunch will be served. Please come visit us. CLIMB Theatre will be making a return visit this Spring with classroom presentations for the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades with the theme of "Dreaming for Real." CLIMB is a theatre group from the Twin Cities that performs for children bringing positive messagse through acting; both dramatic and humorous, music and child participation. The kids enjoy the positive messages and appreciate the effort of the actors.

Reading Buddies
Every Wednesday, Mr. Wulff's Fifth Grade class goes to the Early Childhood Center to read books to Mrs. West's Kindergarten students. The Fifth Graders do a good job of showing how to use the skills they have learned, and showing how reading can be exciting for the younger kids. The Kindergarten students must be doing a good job of listening, because now some of them can read to the older kids!
First Grade Dancing for Health
Did you know that Pow Wow dancing is a great form of exercise? The first graders are learning how to live a healthy lifestyle through the W.O.L.F. curriculum. Miss Indian World, Delana Smith recently demonstrated several styles of Pow Wow dancing to the students. The Red Lake Elementary Princess and Brave, Alicia Jourdain and Markell Neadeau and Brave Joesph Perkins assisted Delana in leading first graders in several dances.
Kindergarten Dance Day
On Thursday, March 3rd, two sessions of dance shows were held in the gymnasium for parents, relatives and friends to come and watch. The students began their show with a creative dance inspired from the movie Monsters Inc. This was followed by the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey. In the last contemporary dance, students used parachutes to show off their dance steps to the Mexican Hat Dance.
Following these dances were the traditional pow wow dances for both boys and girls. The boys had all worked on beading their own chokers for this and the girls wore necklaces that they had also worked very hard on. Some students even wore their regalia which looked very nice.
The culminating dance was the two step and the children went out and asked audience members to become active participants in the dance. Everyone had a lovely time and the Kindergarters deserve a round of applause for all their hard work. Here are some pictures. Also check out the Red Lake News website. |
