The following letters and emails were received by rlnn.com. On behalf of the Red Lake Nation, we thank you all sincerely for your thoughts, prayers, kindness and concerns.
A great sadness is in my family's heart for your tribe today. There are so many forces in this world, that lead children down the wrong path. Sometimes, with the best of efforts--children get lost. From the news that has been written about Jeff, he was lost for a very long time. We think that his mind and spirit were broken, and we pray that he has found peace. The best we can do now is pray, and keep on sharing our love and our traditions and our assistance to each child and to each other. I offer this prayer for you: Father of the peoples of the world, please help us to love and care for each other. Please help us to seek out and counsel and care for the lonely, the alienated, the people who are in need of our comfort, love and help. Amen. Harmony

I am writing as I am saddened to hear of the loss of life regarding the shootings at your high school. I don’t know if I can be of help in any way but would make myself available, if your community needed my help. I have been a substance abuse counselor and clinical supervisor for nearly 20 years. My career has expanded to mental health issues over the years and I feel fortunate to have been in recovery (alcoholism) for over 20 years. I will await a response, but will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts. Blessings to all of you during this very difficult time. Darlene Klien 568 Milford Meadow Drive Milford, MI 48381 darklien@aol.com or kliend@ewashtenaw.org (248) 684-5765 (734) 544-3043
Dear Mr. Barrett, I have no doubt that you have been inundated with messages and requests following the recent tragedy within the Red Lake Nation and I will be brief. I am a 55-year-old Jewish-American woman living in the West Palm Beach, Florida area who grieves with all of you during this most difficult time. The losses sustained by your community have reverberated throughout the entire nation and I pray with you for understanding and comfort during this surrealistic period. The specifics of the case are troubling and sad enough, but what has made me doubly hurt are media accounts that the Red Lake Nation Chippewa tribe is among the poorest in your state. I am deeply saddened to once again learn about the inequities that our Native Americans have long suffered. I have always believed that Native Americans are our nation's premier citizens and stewards of the land -- the only people who loved and protected its natural resources instead of seeking to exploit them. So instead, you and all the tribes were exploited by the white settlers and endured many holocausts and unfair dealings from our government. What a shameful commentary on this nation's history. Many tribes have suffered so greatly and still suffer today. There is too much poverty and hopelessness among Native American peoples. How I wish there were something positive that a well-intended, average person could do to reverse this situation. If you have any suggestions, I would welcome them. In closing, let me again express my deepest sadness and most heartfelt condolences to the entire Red Lake Nation. God bless you all, Barbara Isenberg 130 Silver Bell Crescent Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 (561) 798-2289 discountmailer@earthlink.net
Hey Brother, It is with a sad heart that I write you this email. My condolonces for your loss. there is probably nothing that I could say that can consol you and your people but know that down in the southwest we are praying for your people. We have spiritual runners down here and if you need them to come up we can try to get up there. Your youth are strong and most of the runners are young people, so if they see the strength of the runners it may also remind them of the strength that your young people still have inside them. My name is Leonard Charley, I am a Akimel O'dham from Phoenix. I know you have alot of support but if you need anything up there let me know and I can get you in contact with somebody I have alot of connections. Remember there will be alot to reach out when something first happens this hand will remain in front of you any time you need it all you have to reach out for it. Peace and be strong, RED NATIONS LIVE! Leonard D Charley
Please know that your tribal community, and especially the families of the dead and injured, are in my prayers. My deepest condolences to you all. Most sincerely, Bob Ames San Diego, California (no answer required, you are burdened enough)
Dear Mr. Barrett: Kindly convey our sincerest condolences to your Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr. and members of your Red Lake Band. The condolences are being expressed on behalf of a large group of your Anishnawbe relatives here in the Georgian Bay-Lake Simcoe region of central Ontario Canada who were gathered together here today at Mnjikaning First Nation for a planned regional community Mental Health Gathering. There were nearly a hundred of your relatives gathered here today and you can rest assured that your grief and sorrow is not carried alone by you. On this day our hearts and minds were brought together as one under the guidance of several very well respected community Elders and we were all inspired to look your way and to extend to each of you our finest thoughts and heartfelt condolences. We pray for healing and peace to you and yours, Yvon Lamarche (Metis) Organizing Committee Member BANAC Bimaadisiwin Mental Health and Addictions Committee Y'aanjiweniiwid N'chichaagog – Renewing Our Efforts In Spirit Gathering
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the Tribal members of the Red Lake community. I am Kiowa from Anadarko, Oklahoma. My family has also been touched by violence which took one of our young family members, the manner in which my niece was murdered will forever be etched in our minds. We have gone through the "what if I", or "why didn't I" and "If only I" thoughts that go through your mind at a time like this. The pain will never go away, but please rest assured in knowing that our Creator is with us always and our grandparents were there with open arms to meet those who left this world to go to a better place. And be assured that the outpouring of love and concern from all Native Americans across the country is sincere and heartfelt. I will keep you in my prayers. A-HO Dawn
My heart goes out to all the families that have had a recent loss. May god, the 4 compass points, wind, air earth and fire be with them. We understand so little in what goes on in the great divide. Love to all of you Gordon
I am not a writer, a Native American, a counselor(yet),nor do I want to say anything bad. I just know how hard that boy must have had it. I am a 36 year old minister's daughter who has four boys and has the "life" that everyone wants, instead of acting outwards I did inwards with overdoses, many self mutilations until I had lost over 40 % of my blood. I guess what I want to say is that no one knew what I had suffered as a child and no one saw the signs of what I was going to do. Some times they just are not there. Please to the family of this young man, you could not have stopped him. When we get caught we find other ways and he would have. You all are in my thoughts and by that I mean all. No one could have seen this truely coming. Good Luck and stay with keeping people out. I just heard it on the news today and truely agree you all are family not just neighbors and need time to heal in your way and not in what others say. You will be in my thoughts as with so many of my friends at school who are from the Penobscot Nation. Now, by saying that I am not speaking for the Nation just that I know that some of them are. Your family has a fatal injury but even they can heal if the family works together and at their own time and not on anyone else's time line. Cindi M.R. Shaw 12 Sleepy Hollow Holden.ME. 04429
Hi there. I live in Newark, Ohio and just wanted to let you know that our family is so sorry to hear about the tragedy that your community is living through right now. It is heartbreaking to read the news stories that have been posted about the chaos and terror that so many children in your community had to experience. Such graphic, war-like violence is traumatic for adults and it's so sorrowful to think of your nations' kids to be forced to deal with such horror. My wife and I just had a child this month, so I'm feeling especially sympathetic for your youth. But what a flurry of feelings everyone must be living through now... I can only imagine. I realize that you don't have any idea who I am, nor would I recognize you, but we're all created in the same image. If this short email expressing how much your situation is affecting others around you provides even a moment of encouragement then it served it's purpose. I signed up to post on the 'Red Lake Forum' and found your email address there along with a reference that you live on or near the reservation. I hope you don't mind me contacting you, I just felt compelled to send out this single email out to express our family's heart for you. We pray for comfort, healing, and hope for you and your nation's children. In Jesus' name, Eric Large
TO: The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Nation FROM: Frank & Corie Moran Adakai and Family Albuquerque, New Mexico Our sincere condolences to the entire Red Lake Band of Chippewa Nation and to the immediate families of our beloved young people and adults, who fell victim to the recent tragedy. It will take a long time for the wounds that have been caused to heal. Sometimes, we as Indian people don’t and can’t understand why the creator lets things like this to occur, especially to young innocent lives. It may be a message being conveyed that we need to all re-center our selves, our families, our communities and to get along with one another. It is a great mystery and something for all to think about. Our prayers are and will continue to be with all of you.
Words fail to express how deeply saddened I am for the recent losses in your community. My heart aches for each person affected by this senseless act of violence. Please know I will be holding you all close in my thoughts and prayers in the days and months ahead. Roxanne Swanson Waukegan, IL
Just wanted to say, stay strong. I worked at a factory in Goshen, Indiana that a shooting took place at. I know its hard. Robert Lamb
We are all very deeply saddened and moved by the events at Red Lake. We morn the loss of those in Minnesota whether we live in Ohio, New York, California, or Alberta. Words fail at expressing the depth. Steve
I grew up in Bemidji. I have a North Country heart. It mourns for the Red Lake Nation. Tana Havumaki, Fullerton, California
To my distant relations, Jeffrey Wiese has shared his fear with your world in the most horrible way possible. The shattering of the Red Lake Nation's soul makes everyone know that things can never be the same. For the families of those who died, I want you to know that your grief will not be as heavy over time even though your happiness seems banished forever. After surviving my brother's and later, my sister's murder, I truly understand the devastation that senseless death makes. You will be in my prayers for a lessening of your grief and longer. For the Tribe, my prayers will forever include gratitude for the strengths that have always been obvious and the deeper ones that are called for now. The AP photo showing an elder comforting a child, told me that you already, naturally know what needs to happen next; hugs and reassurance as you face this community sorrow. God bless you and protect you all in the chaos that has stricken your lives. bima'amaazo Sally Fairbanks descendent of Charles Fairbanks
Dear Sir I would like to extend my condoleances to everyone effected by the shooting of the day before yesterday. As a parent I shudder to think that our kids are not safe even in school, while as a fellow human being I cannot bring myself to think about what posessed the boy to do what he did. I read about his tragic family life but although everyone feels for him, he is not the only one. As a child of a man who shot himself and a mother who tried to kill herself, when I was 14, I know how hard it is to pick up the pieces when something like this happens, however, that is not the fault of your fellow man. We will never know what posessed Jeff to do what he did but I will ray for all the people affected by this. With kind regards Desiree Meats (UK) GDC Core Agent
Tansi, I am from the Cree Nation, in Saskatchewan, Canada. I was deeply shocked and saddened by the shootings that took place in your community. Shocked that it was a young First Nations man that did this horrific act of violence. But then again, violence in our native communities has been growing steadily and this is the wake up call to ALL our first nations because it could so EASILY happen to any one of our reserves. I see the poverty, destitution and broken homes that builds a violent society. Gangs are rampant here in Saskatchewan. That could have happened here! That scares me greatly. Where do we go from here? I pray that your community pulls together and to help one other deal with the grief and loss. My heart sheds tears of grief for you, my lips pray to the Creator to give you strength, my arms encompass you in a warm hug, my shoulders are strong enough for you to lean on when you weep. Ekosi, lovestormsgrl, Cree Tribe, Saskatchewan, Canada
Dear Students and Families of Red Lake High School & Red Lake Nation: I wish to send my most heartfelt condolences during this time of sadness many feel worldwide for the loss you are feeling at this time. And my heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you. Throughout my life I have carried many friends to their final resting and children I have cared for during illness during their last months of life. I have never believed in a final resting place for all these dear people in my life. Because they have passed….I know their spirit has risen and is always there. At times we do not see that because we are not looking. Life comes from the Great Spirit (or Supreme Creator...depending on each own persons religious beliefs) and all healing begins with Him. The spirit existed before it came into a physical body and will exist after. If I may be forward here I would like to place a saying that has always been extremely helpful for me and would like to pass it on. There is no author, it is anonymous, and it has been around for some time. Do not stand at my grave and weep Do not stand at my grave a weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint in the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you wake in the morning hush I am the swift, uplifting rush of quite birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. Over the past couple days around the world we have come to see the faces of the beautiful children that we have lost, and children that put themselves in front of others unselfishly to keep others out of harms way. They are true warriors. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all, Robert De Witte
Know the rest of the world mourns with you. Lauren in Arizona
All peoples are born beautiful and innocent. The conditions and environments imposed upon them by societies, external influences and dangerous mass communication influence them and fashion thme into what they become. Look outside your nation for these things. Nature is always fighting with perceived social norms. The battle can be ugly. Good wishes and good fortune to you. J. Gupta
In this time of great sorrow for your community, I just wanted to let you know that people from all over the world are thinking of your community and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Cordelia aka Tina United Kingdom.
I am not sure how to begin. I am sending this to you because I do not know who else I could send it to. I am hoping you can convey my sympathy to all in your area. The tragedy in your home area is a tragedy for many. I pray for your comfort. All of us are Americans and I feel terrible for your loss, it is a horrible loss to all people, and I know it is a greater loss for the proud people in your home. It is my prayer that, at least in some small measure, that you and your neighbors can be comforted in knowing many share your sorrow. I pray your community can feel the love of this entire nation we share. May God's love and peace be with you and all of people of the Red Lake Reservation. Very Sincerely yours, Bob Pearson Proctor, MN
My prayers and thoughts are with the people of Red Lake. Doretta

I hope your community can take some comfort knowing that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Tribes take pride in our young people, communities, and history; and we’re blessed with a closeness and sense of togetherness that’s not found anywhere else. I hope that closeness is a comfort to your Tribal members, and that each of you care for one another with strength, compassion, and patience through these tough times. Rosie R. McCoy Manager, Tribal Operations Program Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians |

To the People of Red Lake Last summer members of my youth group and I journeyed from Pittsburgh, PA to spend a week working with Youth Works, painting homes and helping with the Kids’ Club at the Elementary school. All of us left feeling a profound sense of love and respect for you. In fact we were overwhelmed by the fact that an eagle circled above us the day we left the Reservation. I sadly remember meeting Jeff Weise one day in the parking lot of the elementary school, he seemed then a very lost and trouble soul. The youth of my congregation continue to have fond memories of our time on the Red Lake, please know that we hold you close in prayer; that God will bring you strength, courage and wisdom to meet the days of sorrow that are before you. Pastor Kevin Clementson Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church Pittsburgh, PA
People all over the world are praying for the families and friends who lost loved ones, as well as the entire Red Lake community. You are not alone in your sorrow. We offer our heartfelt condolences to you. Peace, Dan, Su, Anders and August - Taylors Falls, MN
As a former MN resident, I was deeply saddened by the violence in your community. While I am not a Native, in my limited understanding from friends who were kind enough to share their culture with me, I tried to honor those who were lost and support those who are grieving by burning a candle and some MN sage during the time the pipe ceremony was being conducted in St. Paul, MN. Know that you continue to be in my thoughts, prayers and songs. May blessings be with you, Beth
