Don't know who to send this to, but I am so sorry your community has suffered this loss. I hope that Pawlenty flies flags at half-mass to honor the fallen and I support your groups decision to deny the media access to the reservation. I et the Littleton folks would have appreciated the same protection. Sandra Pederson Graduate Student/Research Assistant VDIL Department of Art + Design University of Minnesota Duluth 317 Humanities 1201 Ordean Court Duluth, MN 55812
We just wanted to express our sympathies for this awful tragedy that has occurred in your town. Our hearts and prayers are with you as you deal with this terrible loss in your community. May God comfort you in your time of mourning. Becky Hargis Principal- Grace Baptist Academy
Our Prayers will be with all of you during this time of loss and recovery. The strength of your community will shine through these dark days. The Thomas-Lazar Family
(From the Star Tribune) A time to mourn Given that the Red Lake High School tragedy is a fresh wound in our state, I was surprised to learn that the Legislature continued on with business one day later. I should think that offering up critical pieces of legislation could have waited while we grieved with those affected by the school shooting. Wendy Thompson, Bemidji, Minn.
Dear Honorable Tribal Members of Red Lake of the Chippewa Indians, It is with great sadness of the hearing and seeing of one of our own, becoming to a volatile agenda on March, 21, 2005. I am from the Bad River Band Lake of the Superior Chippewa Indians from Wisconsin. My family's heart and soul go to the entire tribal community for those who have been taken from our earth. This is a very emotional time for us. Together we will heal and together we will soar higher than ever with the Eagles again. This is just a temporary infliction of pain in our feathers. Rest assure, we will soar higher than ever now. I am taking the time to write to you and express my concerns in this case and demeanor of the News Media. I am deeply sadden to see and have the Chippewa Native American Indian's name used along the name of "Neo-Nazi". I urge you to ask that the media to refrain from using and or comparing us (OUR) name affiliated with Neo-Nazi's. It is understandably saddening to see and hear that ten of our brothers and sisters have been taken. Let us not cast the stone upon a innocent person that was ill. We will never know, why or how come this person took the innocent lives of others. However, you must not forget the person who inflicted this pain upon our communities was a BROTHER OF OUR COMMUNITY as well in each of the Nations. But nonetheless he was still a member of your and our brotherhood. I ask that you still defend this person with honor and integrity, even though who inflicted pain. Please respect our Nations legacy. Please DO NOT ALLOW THE NEWS MEDIA to make this out that all Native's are "insane", "unstable", and or "sick'. Please take into consideration that being accepted into the white man's community is hard. It is the tale of two sides. Go to school on an Indian reservation and then once you go off the reservation you are faced with the white man way's. Native American's are suppose to be free. However, with today's society radical, hate and poking fun at Native's are common. Pressure of adapting to society does build up. I also seen on the news that Red Lake is the "poorest" Indian Reservation in Minnesota according to the United State Census. THIS IS NOT TRUE. This is the financial part of it. All the riches of the world are there. The stars, the true part of yours and our heritage. Please, do you see how this is and all builds up against the Chippewa name. Do you see how another person would automatically think; that the Indian's are "poor", "unstable" and "crazy". What was inflicted upon you inside your community has no words. I can not begin to describe what you feel. I can not begin to understand the grieving that you have. I can not begin to imagine what the Student's thoughts were at that time. WE ARE STRONG PEOPLE. WE ARE STRONG NATIVE AMERICANS'. WE HAVE SURVIED AND MADE DUE ALL THESE YEARS WITHOUT THE WHITEMAN'S HELP. PLEASE AND I SAY THIS PLEASE DO NOT LET WHAT HAS TAKEN US SO LONG TO BUILD UP IN OUR COMMUNITY, HOMES, STATE AWAY IN JUST A MATTER OF A SECONDS BY THE NEWS MEDIA. I ask that you STRONGLY urge the News Media to refrain from stereotyping all Native American's as a "NEO-NAZI". I am greatly sorry once again for your communities lose. But please understand that the person was apparently ill from a disease. BUT PLEASE AND I SAY THIS HE WAS A BROTHER TO OUR PEOPLE. He had the same blood as you and I. As I mentioned, this is a sore in our eagles feathers at this time. However, we (your community) will heal and we (your community) will soar high again with the mother and father of this earth. Once again, Your hour of darkness; will become brighter than ever. My prayers and sympathy go out to your community. I am going to be following this case closely to make sure that All Native American's are treated fairly. I do this because I have lost ten brother's and sister's of our own blood. I do this for the PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE of our Tribes. If you would like to talk about this in person please email me at JAMESHALFADAY@hotmail.com or feel free to advise me how to get into contact with you. In Him, James Halfaday Canton, Illinois 61520

My wish for you is that you look for and recieve , the guidence of the great Creator, and know that your sorrow is felt, and shared within the Tribe of the Burt Lake Band. | My heart goes out to all the Red Lake residents. I just wanted you to know that you are all in my prayers. May God comfort you all at this time and in the coming days. Sincerely, Carole Scaggs Springfield, IL USA |
Dear Mr. Barrett, I send to your community my sincerest condolences for the lost lives and the family suffering, resulting from the school shooting. I am terribly upset by this event, too. One of the fondest memories of my 52 years was a visit I made to Red Lake in the early-80s. I was the guest of Vicki Irons Graves and Mary Martinez to attend a 4th of July Pow-wow. I have never felt more welcomed, more accepted or the recipient of as much open-hearted friendship as I did on that occasion. I will never forget the wonderful people of Red Lake, and I grieve with you. Sincerely, Anita Mills anitamills@mindspring.com Hillsborough, North Carolina
| I wrote this song after the Columbine shootings in order to raise awareness and get people talking but it fell on deaf ears. Since then so many more shootings occurred and unfortunately only the ones with a high body count make national news. I'm a parent, a writer, a musician and a frustrated citizen who feels helpless in this time of tragedy but provoked into action. I can never ever relate to the parents who lost children in this tragedy but hopefully in writing this song can maybe help in the healing. | Mike, From a woman hair stylist in Bemidji by the name of Sandy Jo Pilgrim who owns SJ & Co. hair stylist. She wanted to give free hair cuts to victims families. Got a call from the Rocky Mountain News, they are finally starting to figure out that Red Lake is not Columbine...that it is a much deeper story. Michael Michael, Yea I was afraid, that it may be hard to arrange. With so many, and only one of me, lol. To try to help you understand why I wanted to do this, is very simple, I am a Mom. The last thing, that the family is thinking about I am sure is looking good, at a time like this, and this is what I can give, from my heart, I can make them look and feel better at least for the moment. I knew it would be tough trying to arrange it,, and need to think it out better. I guess myself,,maybe there is something else I can do,, My heart goes out to these familys. I do agree with you it could be very overwhelming for me, and may be opening something I could not complete myself.... Take care Sandy Jo |

My grandfather, Loud Thunder, Jim Gopher (English name) originated from Red Lakes many years and settled in Montona. Therefore, I'm a Chippewa. Thus, as blood line kin I feel greatly about your tragedy. However, I'm left with so many questions: How did this happen? This child was deeply disturbed, troubled and had to have exhibited signs? What happened to our native philosophy of taking care of each other? What about the community as the extended family in the absence of the nuclear one? So many questions left in the light or rather in the wake of this tragegy. My condolences to those who lost loved ones, the tribal community, all Native American entities, and to all involved in this incident. We all have suffered. Let's take care of our youth. May God be with you all and us. In Him and His sincerely.. Yvonne Myers Asst Security Manager Code N21FGW 4655 Pasture Road Naval Air Station, Fallon, NV 89496-5000

Please accept our condolences for the RED LAKE FAMILIES. May the Father Bless you and keep you. May he wrap His arms around you with and provide comfort, peace, strength and rest. Blessings! The Leary Family Texas
My heartfelt sympathy reaches out to all members of the Red Lake community. I have very fond memories of the two years I spent with you. I made many friends between July 1, 1968 and June 30, 1970 while my husband (Dr. C. Edward Skeeters) served as a medical officer with the United States Public Health Service. The tragedy of Monday has stirred deep emotions, as I read the all-too-familiar last names of the victims. Please know that you are in my prayers. Sincerely, Barbara Leline (formerly Barbara Skeeters) Scottsdale, AZ
Hello, my name is Vicki Watson, I am from Appling, Georgia. I want to send my deepest apologies for what your town is going through. I could never imagine that heartache your people must be going through. Our Native people should not have to go through something like this we have been through enough!!!!!! I hear the heartbeat of the drum as I write this to you. My husband is in a drum group out of Augusta, Georgia and we visit many pow-wows. When we have drum practice this week I will say a prayer for all the people that have lost loved ones and for the young man that could not take life anymore. I blame the goverment for this tragedy. If our people were not made to live on the reservations and not supply them with the money or supplies they need , where does one turn? This young man was turning to someone for help and could only find the ugliness in this cruel world. He needed to be on the Red Road and Creator would have taken care of him. I am so sorry I get real mad when I see how our people are treated and the FBI and goverment just keeps letting it happen!!! Thanks for listening and you are in my prayers
I am sitting here at Merit Care with my nephew and just wanted to say a few things to the people. As someone who has had a lot of people that I know and am related to involved in these shootings (as victims, people who were there, and those who responded to help) I would like to personally say thank you to a number of people. Thank you to those police officers who risked their lives to ensure he didn't continue through the school, to the EMTs who arrived on the scene and did everything they could and worked as efficiently and fast as they could, to those inside the school who did even the little things like escorting students out of the building and locking doors throughout the building... To you, the heroes who helped so this did not turn out a lot worse than it did I say thank you from the deepest of my heart! I would also like to say thank you to the people who are showing their sympathy and sharing their strength with us. You are helping keep everyone's faith in this world as a place not so dark and bad as sometimes it feels like it is. William Brun
I just wanted to let you and your community know that I am thinking about you, praying for you, and wish there was something I could do to help you. I do a program called Educational Talent Search and go into local high schools all the time to encourage my students to go on to some type of education past high school. I look at each of the kids I serve and remember the kids who died in Columbine...and now in Red Lake. I think of all the things they have ahead of them and how their dreams were once my dreams...to live a full life and do it with dignity and joy. The kids taken away from you are not going to have that chance and I feel deep sorrow for them, and for the community. I know that life is always a chance...a chance that you will be successful, that you will stay healthy, that you will live. But when something like this happens, my heart breaks for what could have been and I just weep on the inside for the families who must somehow put the pieces back together and go on. I hate that the boy who did this will not be able to live life because of the awful act he did. I wish that there had been something someone could have done to help him before it came to this. I wish that kids would learn to open up and let others help them long before they take actions that have reverberations throughout an entire country. I wish we didn't have to see children die far too young and I wish it hadn't been your children. There are really no words that will ever heal this terrible rip in the fabric of your community, but maybe time will. Terri Morgan
FYI, a message from David Minke, City Manager Today, we have the U.S. and Red Lake flags at 1/2 staff at Bemidji City Hall.
Dear Mr. Barrett: I was deeply saddened to hear about your community's tragedy. As a youth, I went to summer camp on Turtle River Lake, near Bemidji. Even though I'm now in Washington, DC, I would really like to help. If I can donate to help with counseling efforts, or whatever might be needed, please let me know whom I should contact. Very truly yours, Ben Rottman
My Beloved Brothers and Sisters, My name is Victoria. I am a woman of white blood (as far as I know) but with a heart and soul in deep alignment with the joy and agony, triumph and seeming defeats, all struggle of all First Nation Families. My heart breaks with you on this day. Who can understand the Great Mystery of the cruel sacrifice of these innocent lives? Perhaps it is the only way to finally open the white man's heart of compassion, which has remained closed with such disastrous consequences to the Earth, Our Mother Herself as well as to the lives of her dear children who have only sought to Love and protect Her. If our species is to survive at all, we must be worthy of continued stewardship of this world. We must live and act as one family. We must understand fully that we are one people, one with all our relations. Every breath and action must be born of this truth. My life is dedicated to this purpose. I have a small spiritual community called Synchronicity of Spirit. My web site http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeohzof/ will post a BLOG today, asking for prayers and donations of money and recourses for the Red Lake Chippewa tribe. if you will please email me with an appropriate person or location where donations may be received directly by you, I will post the instructions immediately. I would be honored tol hold a pipe ceremony for you today. I carry a pipe in Nez Perse tradition and am permitted to do so, upon your invitation. I mourn with you the loss of your children, my children. Our hearts are broken but we know that hearts are eventually restored in greater love and compassion than before they were broken and that the Spirit of your people is indestructible. mitakuye oyasin Victoria

I am terribly sorry to hear the news of the shootings at the Red Lake High School. I'd like to know if donations are being taken for the families of the victims and where I should send donations. Here in Alaska the Tlingit tradition is to send money to families of people who have died. Please let me know if this is appropriate and where I can send it. Thank you, once again...I'm very sorry for your losses. April Carpenter Juneau Alaska

| It's not very often that I solicit this many of you, but in this situation, I thought it would be worth it, to rally support from my family, friends, and colleagues, in making contributions to the Red Lake Indian Nation Memorial Fund. The tribe has set up a fund for the victims, the victims families and the community at large as a result of the phenomenally horrific shooting incident that occurred on the reservation Monday. As most of you already are aware, I have many fond memories of living and working with the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribe of South Dakota, not too far from Red Lake. This is my personal effort in honor of my experiences with them, as I am sure they too are deeply affected because it is so close to home. \ The attached document was sent to me by a legitimate source who works for the National Congress of American Indian, information on where to send your donation is included, but I will also list the address below. Feel free to pass along the encouragement to those you know, who might also be able to participate in charitable giving. No donation is too small! Thank you in advance, for your support and attention to this matter. Please mail your contributions to the following: Red Lake Nation Memorial Fund c/o Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians of Minnesota P. O. | I am not a member of your tribe but I did attend Wahpeton Indian School as well as Flandreau Indian School and have gone to school with many “Red Lakers”. I wish to extend my condolences to the families and the community as a whole and would like you to know that you are in my thought and prayers. My heart weighs heavy and I share your pain. We may never get the answers to our questions but I know what has helped me through the tough times and that is my faith in God. I urge anyone who reads this to pick up a bible and read Psalms or Proverbs. It does help tremendously. May God be with you all in your time of sorrow. Psalm 32:7 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; Psalm 9:9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Sincerely, Frances Sackatook Menominee |

To all the Chippewa at Red Lake, I am so sorry to hear of your tragedy. Please know that I will lift up prayers for all of those involved and the tribe as a whole. It seems these are dark times for all peoples of the earth. So much unnecessary violence and a despair of spirit in mankind. May you be granted strength to endure this and to overcome the pain involved. May your spirits heal and your children believe there is goodness in the world even though at times it is hard to find. I wish I could do more to help. If you need anything to help with this crisis let me know. I am only one person but there are many of us "one persons" who wish to help. Sharon Vigneux

Just wanted someone at Red Lake to know that the Native American community in St. Louis, Missouri is passing e-mails around to have a moment of prayer tonight in solidarity with your community. Also we will have a moment of silence in memorial during our first powwow of the season on April 9th and 10th. Our prayers are with all of you. Sincerely, Burma L. Wilkins
Dear Sir. We have had the privilege to work and live on the Red Lake Reserve back in the early sixties. More specifically, I served as a Pharmacist with the USPHS for approximately 4 years. We remember those days fondly and especially, Maurice "Buddy" Bailey who worked with me at the time. He was a kind gentle man that I admired and respected. We were shocked to learn about the recent shooting at the Red Lake High School. We mourn the loss of innocent people and pray for their families and loved ones. We pray as well for everyone in the community as you work your way through such a tragic event. May the SPIRIT bring you peace. Maurice "Moe" Lacerte

Dear Sir, According to all that I've read and heard, everyone is asking "why?" concerning the recent school murders and suicide. My first thought when I heard it on the news was "I wonder what medication he was on?" I don't know if this has been looked into yet, I haven't heard on the news that it has. It needs to be investigated! It has been proven time and again that psychiatric treatment and drugging have created these situations, the statistics prove it. (see below web sites for starters). We don't need any more of these statistics. In order to stop it we need to find the REAL cause and make it known. I believe the real cause to be the drugging and treatment of our children by psychiatry's barbaric methods. http://www.cchr.org/issues/school/violence/index.htm http://www.cchr.org/issues/school/page01.htm My prayers and thoughts are with your community. All the best, Sue Weibert
Hello, words are inadequate to express my grief for you and your community. My thoughts are with you all.. I am sure there are people that would like to contribute to the families in some way...if there is information on this can you please post it on your website? Thank you , HJI
My prayers and are with you all and especially the families who have been hurt by this tragedy. "May their Spirits fly high to the Heavens on the wings of the soaring Eagles." I was at the CLB Basketball Jamboree the start of this years season. We watched several teams play, which your school was there too and we played you. You have a great coach and your players are good players. When one of our players fell durning the game, they helped them up which shows good coaching, and good sportsmanship Connie
Tonight at our drum group we will sing an honor song for all those you lost - the unity song for your sons, your brothers, your uncles, your fathers and your grandfathers; strong women’s song for your daughters, your sisters, your aunties; yours mothers; and your grandmothers; and we will sing for your Red Lake community and your community everywhere else, a song about the 7 teachings of the creator. Finally, we will include good thoughts for your community members who will begin their journey to the spirit world soon with a traveling song. Jennifer Printup
First I want to say how sorry I am for all the pain and sadness in your community now and for a long time to come. And, I congratulate you for keeping the press out of the way of the mourning families. I grew up in Bemidji in the 40’s and 50’s, but from 1984-95 was the Executive Director for the Girl Scouts in your area. We had a strong program in Red Lake through the Tribal Social Services. I hope Girl Scouting is still a part of that program for girls. Your website is outstanding! When I was in Minnesota, I read the entire transcript of the Dawes Commission hearings that are described in your history page. Do you have that transcript printed anywhere on this website? I looked, but couldn’t find it. I would like to re-read it. Lorena A. Palm Executive Director/CEO Girl Scouts of Michigan Trails 3275 Walker Ave NW Grand Rapids, MI 49544 616-784-3341

I dont usually write these emails, but the recent Red Lake tragedy somehow hit me. I am a retired police officer who has seen his share of grief on the streets and in the military. As such, Sgt. Daryl Lussier would have been my "brother" in law enforcement. He sounds like one hell of a man who will be missed. My main concern is the kids who survived. They will need some extra attention and understanding. I know the Chippewa are a tough and resilient people, even in the face of something of this magnitude. Hopefully, the close-knit community will pull together and help one another. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Respectfully, Dick Landers Wooster, Ohio
I am just a person in Indiana... my children hold Blackfoot Indiana Blood. Deepest prayers, and God's speed towards healing your community. gdw
