I was saddened to see the news this morning.....and my thoughts and heart are with you all....This is a  hard day for all Natives....I wish things were different and my heart didn't need to write these words...that really have no great impact to the heart and soul of those feeling this heavy grief...please know this Native woman walks beside you and you do not walk alone...though we are thousands of miles apart.. distanced by land and water...I am there in heart...

To all the Tribal Members of the Red Lake Community:

No words can express the shock and sorrow felt when such a tragedy strikes within one of our native nations, but please know that my heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with your community and the families who have lost a loved one.

Hi

My name is Greg. I'm from Fresno,CA. Were can we send donations and what can we send for the Red Lake tragedy. My heart goes out to all. My prayers are with you all.

Greg
Good Morning Mr. Barrett,

I would like to extend my profound sympathies to all the people of the
Red Lake Indian Reservation at this most recent tragedy at the Red Lake
High School.

I was totally dumbfounded when I heard this on the news last night and
my heart goes out to everyone in this very tightly knit community. I
hope that everyone will pull together through this terrible experience. I lived in Redby 1965 and 1966 and went to school for my eighth grade and freshman year at Red Lake High School .

My dad was Winfred Hibbard, who rebuilt the Saw Mill after a fire that destroyed it. I have some fond memories of some people there, unfortunately I can only remember a few names--Annie Thunder, who was my best friend there, and Claudette
Beaulieu, who lived up the street from my house and Saw Mill at the
time.

I have been glued to the TV to try to recognize any names as they have
been released. I will check your sight closely in the next few days and
weeks.

Sincerely,
Martha (Hibbard) Merrill
Hi mr. Barrett-

I'm so shocked and saddened to learn of the shooting at the school yesterday. My thoughts and prayers are with your community at this time.  One week ago we had a similar incident in my neighborhood.  I live in New Berlin,Wisconsin a mile from where the guy went into a church service and shot and killed several people before turning the gun on himself.  He lived in my neighborhood.  This all seems so senseless.  We don't understand why these things happen but hopefully knowing that millions of other people are sharing in your loss will somehow ease the pain.

Peace be with you all,
Susanne Siebert
Hello, I am Gary Deyoung.  I am 1/4 CWY (Cherokee) and my ex wife and her 3 girls are Ojibwa.  But we are all 100% human.  In this time
of great sorrow I can only offer my
prayers and an image of CWY peace. May the
Creator heal your nation and lead it to seeing and
achieving its full potential.

Thanks. Gary Wayne Deyoung
My heart aches for you and your community this morning.  I am a retired editor of a small-town newspaper (Wells, MN) and no one from a large news network or a big city can begin to fathom what a small town feels when tragedy strikes, or how difficult it is for a newsperson to continue in his/her job while reporting on devastation among those he/she knows and loves.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To Our Brothers and Sisters,

Please know that you are in our prayers. It is tragic to loose the balance within our communities, schools, and families. It is something we all strive for everyday in Indian Country. Please know that you are not alone.

I will be sending tobacco asap to offer healing.

Sirs,

My husband and I live in southern Oklahoma, too far away from your recent troubles to physically assist you. However, being that my husband is Witchita, and we were deeply affected by the recent tragedy you are dealing with, we would like to help in any way possible.

If there is something we can do, anything, please contact us as your available time permits.

In the meanwhile we send our heartfelt condolences to the entire Tribe and have sent smoke to ease the way of all those lost and those in pain.

Mike and Linda Hutchins
Dear Mr. Barrett,

I searched Red Lake Tribal Council for an email address by which to
send my condolences. Yours is the only one I could find. If you know
their address, perhaps you could forward this message?

I am writing to express my sympathy to the Red Lake Tribe for the
tragic shootings yesterday.

I am an enrolled member of White Earth and I saw the news last night. I was shocked and it hurt me deeply that anyone could hurt inside so very much that they would do such devastation to any of our Ojibwa people.

I send my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those beautiful souls lost in the school shooting. May the Creator send comfort and peace to those living and hold those gone in his arms forever.

There are just not enough words to convey how sad I feel, a Sister Ojibwa in Oregon

I just wanted to express to the members of Red Lake our deepest
sympathy during this time.  My family is on a small reservation in California,
and we will pray for the families who have suffered such loss.

I found your website at Indianz.com, and hope that this will express
how badly we feel for our sisters and brothers at Red Lake.  What happens
in one Native community is felt in all Native communities.

I also wanted to compliment you on your website.  It is probably the
best tribal site I've ever seen.  I will be checking back to keep updated on
the community's progress.  Again, please know that our prayers will be with
you.

Pat Wright
The prayers of my family go with the victims of the Red Lake High School shooting.  May The Grandfather watch over you and bring healing.

Good afternoon, Mr. Barrett.

My name is Rhondelle Emery. I'm a 25 year old woman
from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. This morning, I was
reading the news and, as you might expect, came across
the story regarding the tragic incidents that occurred
yesterday in your school on your reservation. I didn't
know who else to contact during this time, but I
wanted to extend my deepest sympathy to your tribe and
especially to the young men and women from the school.
I am a general aide at the Todd County High School in
Mission, SD on the Rosebud Reservation, so stories
like these always hit close to home.

I felt a need to contact someone from your reservation
to find out what there is that can be done. I would
like to, in some way, help the families during this
time. If you have any ideas or information for me on
how to go about this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Several of my students have also expressed an interest
in being involved.

We all thank you and again, our heartfelt condolences
and prayers to you.

Mitakuye Oyasin,
Rhondelle Emery
To Whom It May Concern:

My Name is Imani Learned, I live in Viera, Florida and cannot fully express how sorry I am that your Nation has to endure through such a ridiculous and horrible tragedy.  I know that I cannot do anything to help except to pray for the healing of those both physically and psychologically wounded by this mindless, evil shooting.  My heart breaks with your community and my prayers harmonize with your prayers for healing and strength to move on in grace and dignity.  I am deeply sorry for all that Redby has had inflicted on it.  God bless you all and know that all the way in Florida people are shocked for you and wounded for you and praying and caring for you.

Imani Learned
I don't know who else to send this to as there are no email contacts on the school website that I could find. My heart goes out to your community. On May 1, 1992 a man walked into our high school and murdered three students and a teacher. We are still feeling the effects of it today. My child was lucky as I heard a voice that day tell me to get my child out of school and I did. But that didn't spare her from the fear and nightmares that followed. I cannot count the nights I spent rocking my sobbing child and trying to explain the madness to her.

These children from your school will need so much help with this. Loud noises are going to send your students diving to floor for fear it's happening again. Our school was terrorized by bomb threats for years after. Classes had to be held on the football field.

But what I worry about is the child that doesn't have support at home. The one that stands off alone in school. The school needs to watch for these children the most. Encourage the parents if they see this child to draw them into thier comfort. They may prevent another death or killing.

I hope this can help someone in some small way. Your community will be in my prayers.

I was just at your Red Lake Net News site, and wanted to send a quick email.

My wife and I just returned a few days ago, from our 18 year old Niece and Godchild's funeral in Wisconsin.  She was a victim of a traffic accident due to weather conditions.  Knowing some of what the families and everyone is dealing with, I just wanted to confirm to you that each of you are in our thoughts and prayers and the thoughts and prayers of all, across the state, country, and beyond.  May God's love sustain you in this troubled time.

Our deepest sympathies go out to all of you at Red Lake.  We know several people from your community and your town has been added to our local churchs' prayer chain.
I know that you are all trying to wade through this as a community and just know that you are in the prayers of local people and also around the nation.

My husband has officiated many of your basketball games, and he is a local pastor, should anyone need prayer or grief support please don't hesitate to ask.

God Bless you all,

I read of the tragedy at your High School and just wanted to send my prayers to your community. This is such sad news for people who are already dealing with so much.  May the Spirit-That-Moves-Through-All-Things guide and protect you during this time and always.

Ahneen Mr. Barrett;

I am an Ojibwa woman living in Canada.  I am wondering if there is something that other communities can to help your community during this time of need.

Can you tell me if there is a trust fund set up that will offer people a chance to help in some way.   Is there anything else your community may need during this time of loss and crisis?  I work in media and can help get distribute news and press releases if you require.

Hello,

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the people touched by the school
shooting.  I am from Kentucky.  There was a shooting here a few years
ago you may remember.  Though it happened on the other side of the
state from where I live, it affected so many.

It's hard to know what would go on in the mind of the shooter, and as
hard as it is to forgive, he was obviously suffering too, having lost
his father to suicide and his mother having brain damage.  That is, of
course, no excuse.  But, problems like his go on throughout our country
and I wish we could do more to help them too.

God bless and take care of all the victims and family members.

May the Lord bless and keep all of you.

I’m saddened to hear the events on your reservation.  I prayed for your people after I heard this on the news.  This is so terrible.  This could happen on any of our reservations.  We will have our Spring ceremonials and I will pray again for all the families including this boy.  Some of our people are lost and need help including prayer.  Please convey my condolences to the families or if you provide a mailing address, I will send a letter.  Thank you for your time.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences from my family to your nation in
this time of great sorrow.
Words fall short to express the turbulent world our children find
themselves living in today.

I'm very sorry to hear of the carnage at the high school on the reservation yesterday.  By killing himself (the gunman) that didn't end it in the least for him for he now has to answer to the Great Spirit in the sky in regards to this matter...

As a victim of a previous high school shooting (Grand Rapids '66) news
of the shootings in Red Lake makes me very sad and hurt. That in todays
society, we as adults have not figured out how to reach out and help
our young people through the tough years of their youth. It will take the
community a generation to forget, but for others it will be a life time
of bad memories.

I hope and pray that all of the victims and family members can come
together as one family and get over this terrible day. And that the
youth of your community can accept the diversity of others.
I pray that the elders of your tribe can share with your young people
their knowledge and come together as one strong family....

God Bless

I just read the news about the boy who went on a shooting spree and
killed so many. I was wondering if anyone has asked if he was on a

It would be good to know if people are looking into that.

Dear Friends,

I thought you might like to know that I had message from the City Manager about flying the Red Lake flag.  After checking with Red Lake Tribal Treasurer, Darrell G. Seki, Sr., for protocol, so the city will be flying the Red Lake Nation flag at half mast for up to a week in honor of our neighbors.

Dear Mr. Barrett,

To the Red Lake Chippewa Nation,

We send our prayers and blessings to you at this distressing time.  We
are lighting cancles and sending peace and healing with the help of holy
water from St. Winifred's holy well in Wales.  It has been called the Lourdes
of Wales and pilgrimages of faith have been made to this well for 1000
years.

We pray for the poor souls that were killed, the injured, the shocked
and traumatized.  We pray for the families and friends and also for the
soul of the sadly disturbed young man that has been the catalyst of this
tragedy.  Many people are suffering the loss of those they love at the moment for
some reason.  May the Celtic time of the Alder tree bring you emotional
strength to help your people overcome this tragic event.  May the time of
Ostara, the spring equinox, bring the assistance of the animals and forest to your
people.

May the Great Sprit and Earth Goddess bring harmony to your
people and may the gentle spring rains gently wash your pain and help the
children's innocent smiles return.

In sympathy,
Beth Ditson, family and friends
Dear Friends,

I write to express our concern and prayers for you all in these days of tragedy.  My daughter attended Santana High School in Santee, Ca. on the day 2 died and 13 were wounded in March 2001. Although Rusti was not hit buy the bullets that flew past her as she stood just outside the room the shooter fired from, she recognized that 2000 + students and their families were wounded that day and rallied students to look to the hope of the future and do what each one could to change things for good.

We have lived the nightmare you now face and we must let you know that we care about your loss and pain.  Both my husband and I encourage our daughter Rusti Lang to reach out to other young people when we hear of these things happening.
Rusti has spoken to many groups of students or community members about her experience and how youth effected by such senseless violence can become a positive force in their schools and in your case, nation. If she or we can be of help by coming to your community to speak or even just be there to honor the families touched by this please call or email.  We will find a way to get there when you need us.

I know the Native American nations are tight nit so I mention that my husband and I have both earned Cross Cultural Studies degrees with an emphasis on Native American studies under Tom Gamboa at Grossmont College.

We realize from our own experience after our school shootings that all sorts of people come from no where offering "help" and are not offended at all by anyone checking on us.  A search on the internet "Rusti Lang" will tell you we are as represented.

We are Christians, and that plays a part in everything we are and do.  That said we have no intention of manipulating this into an evangelical "opportunity".  We truly want only to let you and your students know we understand the grief you now face.  If we can help in any way please contact us night or day.

Blessings to all in your community,
Becky & Larry Lang
I wanted to write and express my deepest sympathy for the tragedy that has struck your community.  I am at a loss for words.  Nothing in my life compares to what you are going through at this time.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers for a long time to come.

Hi,

My name is Janet (Page) Spooner.  I once worked on the Red Lake
reservation as a nurse 25 years ago when the new hospital was first opened.
It saddens me very much to hear what you all as a tribe are going
through at this time and I just felt the urge to write to you.  I remember
my time at Red Lake with such fond memories--even have a picture of Red
Lake itself hanging in my house to this day.  I enjoyed all the people
I met and the traditions I encountered with such great joy.  You are
strong in faith and I know that you will endure despite what one person
has done to try to bring that down.
I have viewed your website often and love it.  I send support to you
and you are all in my prayers.

I would just like to express my sorrow and compassion to your peoples from one 1st nations person to another. 1000s of miles separate us but we as 1st nation peoples are all kindred folk.  In these times the best thing going for us to help get us through things like this is community and respect for the old people and each other and culture and listing to the sprits of our ancestors.

To all my native Sisters & Brothers, my deepest love, respect and compassion.

I am so sorry to hear about your losses.

My prayers go to you and your community.

God Bless all of you.

My sisters are Miami (Twigh Twee) from the family of She-Moc-E-Nish on their father's side, and German on our mother's.  It has always been with humility from this perspective that I regarded the wars of the last two centuries.  Though our German relatives had traveled here in 1912, cousins remained and doubtless fought well in both world wars, and were then East Germans until there was no more East Germany.

I have the honor of having made friends among the Tuscarora and the Potawatomi as a volunteer organizer and host of a major festival in Indiana, the Feast of the Hunter's Moon.

I have fumbled to introduce myself so that I may properly express these meager sentiments.

It is with humility and compassion that I share the sorrow of your community, the responsibility for blinding anger in young hearts, and the hope for more peaceful souls.

Please forward this small gesture of respect and sorrow to your tribal leadership if appropriate.

Sincerely,
Robert Evans
My heart aches for your community.  I survived the shootings of 4-20-99 at Columbine and I currently teach there.  Many people are about to tell you what is good for you and what you did wrong.  Take care of yourselves.  If I can help with anything, sub for teachers, offer anything--please call me.

I was saddened to hear about the carnage at the High School. Reports in the Twin Cities indicate that Red Lake Police Officers engaged the suspect in the hallways of the school.
As a retired Deputy Sheriff I know the courage it took for those Officers to exchange gunfire with the suspect. You should be very proud of your Police Department.

I want to extend my sympathy to your community and to commend those Officers for putting their lives on the line to save others.

Sincerely,
Gil Schroepfer
I am offering my prayers and sympathy to your devastated members.  My heart breaks with your pain.

National Congress of American Indians Extends Condolences to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians of Minnesota

NCAI President Tex Hall said the recent school shooting tragedy for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians of Minnesota is a great loss for all of Indian Country. NCAI is urging support from tribal governments to provide economic aid, prayers, and other spiritual support for tribal members, especially tribal youth.

"It is with great sadness that I extend my prayers and condolences to the families and friends who have suffered from the loss of loved ones due to this senseless tragedy," said Hall. "Yesterday, we watched in disbelief as the Red Lake community suffered a horrific tragedy. I speak for all of the NCAI membership as I express my sympathy and support to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians."

"Our youth are one of our most precious resources and represent the future of our peoples. We must work together to care for and protect this valuable asset," Hall said. "Although violence such as this can leave the community with an overwhelming sense of fear and violation, we must remember to be strong and support one another through this crisis."

To the Red Lake Tribe,

As the past Chairman of the Southern Oklahoma Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes; Arapaho Chief, and father I am sending this message to all the families whom lost a tribal member in the shooting and senseless killing.  A ceremonial PRAYER of peaceful and warm words to all families crying tonight we feel the hurt and lost with you. The Great Spirit is with us tonight because I believe he is always with the Native People no matter what happens, we have all walked through darkness but the Great Spirit has shown us the light and blessings everyday through our children and elders. This light has come on once again for our people to see the beauty of life and each other. So I pray you and your tribe will come out stronger and we will always be brothers and sisters in this beautiful country which our Great Spirit has given to us to live.  We send our Blessings and Prayers!

Dear Friend,

In an effort to show that our prayers are with Red Lake during this time of loss, we wanted to let you know we have posted excerpts from a story from the Native Times & AP at the following pages at
http://threehoops.com to encourage donations directly to help.  The excerpts are at: http://threehoops.com/people/news.html where we have provided direct links to your Tribal Nation website and to your RLNN site.  We have also included information to encourage our site visitors to help at our Roundtables at: http://www.threehoops.com/wforum/index.php

We always prefer though to be a conduit for the direct statements or needs of Tribes or their people instead of speaking ‘for’ anyone – so please accept this note also as our invitation to use the Roundtables as another direct way to get information out in addition to the very thorough work you already do at your RLNN site.  If you would like to have your site listed under our Native Media section – we’d be happy to do so.

And if there are any direct statements that would be helpful for Red Lake to have more widely distributed – please let us know.

Sincerely,
Wanda Jean Lord

I wish to send my prayers for all impacted by the recent events in your community.  In this life, we all often walk in the trails of other's pain, fear and malice.  Even though God will not circumvent the passage, He will and does walk through it with us, bracing us when we stumble and carrying us when we fall.  God bless, save and keep us all.

Dear Friends,

Our deepest sympathy and prayers to all those who experienced the loss of a loved
one in the tragic school shooting. Our prayers are being offered for those who are
recovering from their wounds. Only God knows what happened. In this life things
happen that we cannot do anything about and unfortunately this was one of them.

With much concern for all,

Robin
Please relay my deepest sympathies to my brothers and sisters for their

i am a Chief of the Skidi band of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma.  We
heard of your Nation's tragedy and i want to offer my condolences and sympathy to
all of the victims families.  It is sad to hear of so many young lives taken
from us in such a manner as this.  My heart goes out to your people.
these young people are our future leaders and we need to teach and
cherish them as they are growing up. our traditions and way of life are
vanishing and its up to our children to keep it going

Its a tough time for any young person to grow up in but we as elders
can guide these young women and men and maybe pull them back to the right path before its to late for them.

On behalf of the Pawnee Nation, we want to offer our sympathy to all
families of this tragedy and we share in your grief
