Correction to Ojibwe
News article by Georgia Downwind
During the 4th of July pow-wow in Red Lake, two of my friends had a concession stand there. They paid their $150.00 for
their spot. They bought their supplies to sell at their concession stand.
I visited them and right from the start of the pow-wow
they were having electrical problems. The power to their stand was going on and
off, making it almost impossible to sell their wares. I took it upon myself to
help them, I went to the announcers stand to report the problem. I was told
that Dude May was in charge of the electrical during this pow-wow.
They called for him over the PA system. He never showed up.
The last day of the pow-wow, the electrical situation worsened. Both stands were
very upset and frustrated. I spoke with both stands and said
I would go & make sure somebody does something to remedy the
situation which at this point was volitile. I
reported to the announcers stand again that the situation was getting heated
and somebody needed to fix the electrical! Again I was told they would
call Dude May, I advised that he didn't show up before and they probably should
get someone else and that Clyde Graves was in the stand next to theirs. It was
decided that Clyde would be asked to fix the electric. When
I got back to the two stands Clyde was working on the electrical and reported that he needed parts
but had it working for the time being.
The next thing I knew, Billy May was telling me not to go and
quarrel at the girls in his stand again. I advised him that I hadn't
quarreled at them. He told me that I was nothing but an "old
lady that goes around quarreling and causing trouble where ever I
go".
I took offense to this and shared some words with him in defense
of myself. While we were sharing words I noticed that some of Billy and
Thelma's family were showing up at his stand. I tried to calm myself down
and then went back to the bleachers where my daughter Kristy and Tutter were sitting. They could tell something was
wrong and when I told them, they went to look for Billy May.
Tutter came upon him behind the bleachers and
poked him in the stomach with the end of his cane. I am greatful that it didn't escalate from there. I am not an
"old lady trouble maker", all I was doing
was helping out people. I am sorry if I offended anybody whose name
was wrongfully included.
Of course I could say a lot more about "things" but I
think the situation that I have described here speaks for itself.
