Everything is Indian
By Gretchen

After loving you
Everything is Indian
Sequoia mini van
At Minnehaha falls
Clear blue dreams
Bone splitting from bone home
Everything is Indian
Kindness and the verge of tears
Love in the nest of your neck and hair
And Indian, to be exiled from there

After losing you like a elevator door closing
The vertical image of you alive thinning to metal boom
doors
After losing you
Everything is Indian
The clouds, of course
The names, the words
And sound.
The people walking
On Hiawatha.
And, Lake Nokomis.
The children
All of them
Everywhere
The food inside my mouth
But not this hard table
The places
The lakes
Movement
Oneida silverware
And bowls
Winding the summer around a fork on a road trip to
Winona
A handhold
That’s yours
Skin that comforts
No matter what’s been
Everything is Indian
Everything that grows
Everything broken and owned
Everything let go
And how you always come back
After losing you
That’s Indian too
Laughter
Twirling me in the air
When I asked you a question
You left me there
Denouncing you
Romantizing you
In Minnesota
After loving and losing you
Everything is Indian
Cherokee Jeep
St. Sault Marie
Canada
Rivers naturally
A friend
That je ne sais quoi
Well then it would be French Indian
I guess, Métis I guess
But with you it’s Indian
All the way
All of New York
Corn, Potatoes and wild rice
And the blueberries
I painted on the blanket
Where you slept all over me.
The tobacco I die for
The blood spots on the t-shirt you wore
Your broken Indian jaw
Your broken Indian nose
Your lost Indian teeth
Somewhere by the Mississippi river
Or maybe by your tribal ID
Lost on Chicago Ave.
Displaying your blood quantum
Face down to the concrete.
Yes, after loving you
Everything is Indian
Laying on the floor with you
Laughing, you tell the stories of each scar and bullet
mark
And then smile and look for mine.
But ,.…….I lost you to other things.
White things I guess.
Or White and Indians things in collision
Whatever that’s called.

Maybe, I just need to get away from here
Go somewhere like Oklahoma
Or Nebraska, New Mexico…
Tacoma, South Dakota, Kansas, Alabama?
California?
