Panthers’ Ninham continues hot shooting

Bears now 3-0 after upending Warriors

      WALKER – Cass Lake-Bena senior Byron Ninham connected on 7 of 8 3-point attempts in a 40-point night to lead the Panthers to a 78-59 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Friday.

      Ninham had 38 points through the first three quarters.

      CLB (2-1) also got a double-digit effort from Anthony Robinson with 10 points.

      The loss was the season opener for the Wolves (0-1).

      Mike Lien led WHA with 17 points and Danny Kerrigan added 12 points.

      The Wolves travel to Pequot Lakes Thursday for their next start while CLB battles Red Lake Tuesday in Red Lake.

      CLEARBROOK – Clearbrook-Gonvick hit the 95-point mark for the second time in only three games Friday to beating Red Lake 95-63 to remain undefeated at 3-0.

      Red Lake kept up with the Bears’ offense for much of the game but C-G exploded in the second quarter outscoring the Warriors 28-6.

      Sophomore Clayton Johnson scored a game-high 27 points in the win. Junior Scott Stebe and senior Jonny Berg poured in 15 points each and Mike Eck added 10 points.

      Senior Daryl Crowe led the Warriors with 17 points. Sophomore Buster Graves and junior Dallas Crowe added 15 and 11 points respectively.

      Clearbrook-Gonvick hosts Sacred Heart Thursday while Red Lake hosts Cass Lake-Bena Tuesday.

      LAPORTE – Laporte outscored Nevis 16-8 in the second quarter for a 30-18 lead and didn’t look back winning 52-40 Friday night.

      Senior Michelle Bessler led the Wildcats with 15 points. She also grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double.

      Senior Heather White and juior Megan Zubke also hit double figures for Laporte (2-2) with 10 poitns each. Zubke also led the team with five assists and five steals.

      Nevis (1-2) was led by senior Jane DeCrans and freshman Gretta Hjelseth with 11 points each. Ali Hesse added 10 points.

      Laporte is at Blackduck Tuesday and Nevis hosts Kelliher/Northome Monday.

      KELLIHER – A 25-8 halftime lead turned into a 51-32 win for the Blackduck girls basketball team Friday night over Kelliher/Northome.

      Junior Jamie Exner led all scorers with 16 points for the Drakes, who improved their record to 2-1. Kelly Carlson had a fine night with 11 points and 15 rebounds. The senior also dished out six assists and had five steals.

      Senior Jenna McKean led the team with eight assists. She also added four assists.

      Mustangs’ senior Ember Anderson scored a team-high 13 points. Anderson also led the team with three steals.

      Rachel Nistler dished out a team-high seven assists and Kayla Poxleitner led the Stangs on the boards with six rebounds.

      Kelliher/Northome (1-2) travels to Nevis Monday while Blackduck hosts Laporte Tuesday.
