A REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
FROM STUART DESJARLAIT
RED LAKE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
AUGUST 2005
It’s been a while since I last submitted a report to the community. As we all know, a lot has happened during that time. Red Lake School District encourages parents and students within the district to contact the school superintendent if they have any questions concerning district plans in security, academic, and building activities.
The Board of Education approved a number of security measures at their August 2 meeting. The district will work with the local Public Service Agency in securing two armed police officers during the 2005/06 school years. One would be placed at the high school and one at the middle school. Another measure the board approved was a controlled access area into each building. Work will begin on one controlled access at each school building entrance in the district. Students and visitors to the building will access the building at this entrance and will have to go through the metal detector. Security cameras will be placed at these entrances and the security guard on duty will monitor access into the building. The board also approved an update to the intercom system within each building. An override system to the do not disturb (DND) feature of the phone system will be installed. Replacement of door locks within the district will be reviewed with the lock vendor. Once the district determines how many doors in the district need to have updated locks installed, work will be approved for the lock vendor to proceed with the work.
**The renovation of the new addition is to begin shortly. The district will work on the three science rooms and have them available to students the first day of school. The A+ computer lab and the technology lab will be completed by November 1st and students assigned to these two classroom at the beginning of the second nine-week period. Renovation plans will also begin on the new high school administration office that will be located in the new addition area. The high school administration will move into this portion of the new addition at the beginning of the 2006/05 school years.
**In addition to the renovation construction, work will also begin on the new classroom additions at the middle and high school. This phase of the building project was approved by the State legislature during the 2005 session and is in the amount of $18 million dollars. Plans are to break ground on this construction phase during April 2006.
**Students planning on participating in fall football or volleyball must have on file an updated physical before they will be allowed to practice. If you need a physical, contact the hospital to schedule one.
