CLB’s Fairbanks has another solid All-Star outing

ST. PAUL – Maroon easily beat Blue 100-80 and Cass Lake-Bena’s Brady Fairbanks led Gold over Green 110-109 during the second day of the Minnesota Coaches Association boys basketball all-star games Saturday afternoon at Concordia University.

Fairbanks, who has verbally committed to Bemidji State University, scored a team-high 22 points for Gold behind 6 of 8 from 3-point land. Eric Carlson of Shakopee and Sal Simmons of St. Paul Johnson added 16 points each in the win while Dennis Williamson and Moorhead’s Erik Lien added 15 and 13 respectively.

Trevor Mbakwe of St. Bernard’s High School led the Green with game-highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds.

Xavier Reed of Osseo scored a game-high 19 points for Maroon. Santino Clay led Blue with 18 points.

Mbakwe led the 2-game All-Star series with 43 points while Fairbanks netted 40. Reed and Clay each tallied 35 points and Alex Nelson of Kingsland ended with 34.

In addition to Fairbanks, other regional players in action were D.J. Winfield of Mountain Iron-Buhl (9 points), Andrew VanHavermaet of Hawley (7), Ryan Shea of Duluth East (9), Landon Stanfield of Brainerd (6), DeAngelo Brackins of International Falls (19), and Jake Driscoll of Dilworth-Glynndon-Felton (10).

Players from the All-Star series who have signed a National Letter of Intent or have verbally committed to play college athletics at the NCAA Division I level are Justin Stommes (Rocori, Eastern Kentucky), Alex Rubin (Robbinsdale Armstrong, Illinois State), Mbakwe (St. Bernard’s, Marquette), Al Nolen, Jr. (Minneapolis Henry, Minnesota), Eric Carlson (Shakopee, North Dakota State), Zach Filzen (Northfield, Northern Arizona), Drew Lundberg (Owatonna, Northern Iowa), Dennis Williamson (Cooper, Utah State) and Noah Dahlman (Braham, Wofford). Playing DII athletics are Fairbanks (Cass Lake-Bena, Bemidji State), Elijah Blakesley (Maple River, MSU-Mankato), Preston Whitaker (St. Cloud Apollo, MSU-Mankato), Taylor Witt (Morris, St. Cloud State), Trent Carlson (Belle Plaine, Southwest Minnesota State), Matt Theis (Eden Valley-Watkins, St. Cloud State) and D.J. Winfield (Mountain Iron-Buhl, Minnesota-Duluth). Theis and Winfield will play football. In addition Eric Hugoson of Fairmont will play at Bethel College and DeAngelo Brackins of International Falls will stay at home and play football at Rainey River Community College.
