Executive Director of the American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University


Position:  Executive Director of the American Indian Resource Center
Type of Appointment:  Excluded Administrator
Total Compensation Package:  Competitive and Dependent on Qualifications
Date of Appointment:  June 1, 2008 or as soon thereafter as possible
Application Deadline:   April 1, 2008 and will continue until filled

Responsibilities:  The primary responsibility associated with this position is to provide leadership for the University’s American Indian Resource Center (AIRC).  Specific expected initiatives that support the primary responsibility include the following:
Promote the AIRC and develop effective strategies to increase AIRC’s positive presence in the community at large.
Lead grant proposal preparations for American Indian campus-wide initiatives;
Lead development and fundraising efforts for American Indian initiatives in conjunction with AIRC advisory committee and University priorities;
Lead University efforts in implementing recommendations of MnSCU’s American Indian Plan;
Create positive work environment to enhance University’s student services to American Indian students;
Serve as the primary University liaison with American Indian communities, particularly those Nations in the service region;
Work closely and effectively with Minnesota tribal governments, Indian communities, tribal colleges and the University’s American Indian Alumni Chapter;
Develop, implement, and measure progress on the AIRC strategic plan;
Develop and implement strategies that best utilize AIRC facilities and that provide an on-going plan for the facility to meet current trends;
Insure that the AIRC facilities and programs are supportive and compatible with the education mission of the University and individual efforts of its students;
Provide effective management of AIRC’s staff and operations to ensure that the priorities of the organization are met;
Conduct formal annual evaluation and assessment of AIRC programming;
Develop and supervise youth programs and collaborative efforts with local schools;
Develop and deliver ongoing and new programming for the region and university campus involving American Indian culture, history, and other related topics of importance;
Develop and maintain relationships with tribal colleges in Minnesota, the United States and First Nations;
Work closely with, support and advocate for the Indian Studies Program;
Supervise staff, conduct annual evaluations of staff members, and administer contracts;

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate for this position will be a leader who brings passion, strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to the development and implementation of American Indian programs at the AIRC and University.  Master’s degree required, Doctorate preferred.  Five to seven years of increasingly responsible leadership experience..  Evidence of successful new initiatives, liaison work and community building required.
