The first review of applications will begin on July 25, 2008. The letter of application should be sent by email to Johnson.Bia@pima.edu or sent via mail to: Dr. Johnson Bia, President of Downtown Campus, Pima Community College, 1255 North Stone Avenue, Tucson, Arizona 85709. Background Information: Frederik II High School Inspector Mr. Svenn Poppe has provided the following background regarding the conference and the wish to bring over 2 Native American students. Each year the Frederik II high school in Fredrikstad, Norway, organizes an international week in conjunction with a Norwegian nation-wide initiative called Operation Day's Work. For the past 7 years the school has also organized a youth conference and invited 20-25 foreign students, mainly from European schools. It has also invited students from South Africa (twice), from Israel and Palestine, and from Ireland (one Catholic and one Protestant) - these students have talked about the situations in their home countries, thereby inspiring discussion and debate. Approx 40 students from Frederik II HS attend the conference, so that the 60-70 participants represent an average of 10-15 nations. During the course of the week students discuss relevant problems and issues, participate in social activities, visit Oslo as well as schools in the Fredrikstad vicinity, and get an idea of what a typical school Day looks like. Guests are lodged in the homes of Norwegian students. The conference takes places during the last weeks of October. The purpose of the conference is to achieve some of the goals that are in the school's mission statement about international solidarity, networking across borders, building tolerance, etc. It also provides students with an excellent opportunity to practice their English! The school's desire to invite two Native American students is occasioned not only by the annual conference, but also the introduction of a new curriculum; the English curriculum module that requires students to familiarize themselves with the culture of an indigenous minority in an English speaking nation. It is therefore hoped that one might achieve two goals; if two Native American speakers could attend the youth conference, and also spend a couple of days at the school telling about their experiences, this would be an exciting to fulfill the requirements of the curriculum. The school is looking for two Native American youths, ages 17-19, one of each gender. They should be comfortable standing before an audience and telling a little about themselves, but other than that there are no specific requirements. The school would pay to Norway and their stay there; they would only need pocket money.
