Red Lake Elementary School Student to Attend National Young Scholars Program.
Avery Yepa, 10-year-old student from the Red Lake Elementary School was nominated by his 4th grade teacher, Sara Zawacki to attend the National Young Scholars Program. In December 2007, Avery received his letter of acceptance from the National Center for Early Academic Excellence, National Young Scholars Program that he had been selected to attend their program in the summer of 2008.
Avery will be attending his session on July 25-31, 2008 at the University Plaza Conference Center, Dekalb, Illinois. The National Young Scholars Program (NYSP) is specifically designed and created for 2nd-5th grade students with a history of academic achievement, who even at their young age have demonstrated a high degree of leadership potential.
The National Center for Early Academic Excellence accepts only the most mature and independent individuals possible to attend NYSP. Avery selected the discovery strand, Medicine: The Incredible Human Body and he will also be presented with the Leadership Strand.
Avery received $1000.00 from the Red Lake Tribal Council and raised the remaining amount needed for his tuition through food sales that were held at two RLHS Boys basketball home games. Avery will also be having a few more fundraisers before he leaves for his program.
Avery would like to thank the Red Lake Tribal Council, Red Lake School District, all the basketball fans that purchased food & his family that helped with his food sales.
